Anathema - Weather Systems
31. Jan 2012 at 18:35

Anathema's next studio album 'Weather Systems' has been officially announced. Out on Kscope on April 16th. They are right when they say that WHBWH set the bar high, they say they surpassed it with this record and I cannot wait to hear it.

This is definitely my most looking forward to album for 2012.

Artwork/original info here: http://www.anathema.ws/news.cfm

"Anathema will return in April with Weather Systems, their brand new studio album.

Weather Systems is the follow-up to 2010’s We're Here Because We're Here. That album featured prominently in numerous end-of-year polls and the producer, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has described it as 'definitely among the best albums I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on.'

The bar for Weather Systems has been set pretty high then but Daniel is certain that the album will exceed these lofty expectations, ‘it feels like we are at a creative peak right now, and this album reflects that. Everything from the production to the writing to the performances are a step up from our last album.’

He continues, ‘This is not background music for parties. The music is written to deeply move the listener, to uplift or take the listener to the coldest depths of the soul.’

The intertwining melodic structures of these profoundly beautiful songs are intensely powerful, yet simple. These are songs that will transport the listener closer to the heart of life, that is to say, to the heart of themselves.

It is also an album of polarity. The play of opposites; light and shade, birth and death, love and fear. The simple truths of life and loss, hope and strength and darker internal themes are all explored here.

The album was recorded in Liverpool, North Wales and Oslo, each place significant to Anathema past, present and future. The record was produced and mastered by 5 times Norwegian Grammy nominated Christer-André Cederberg (Animal Alpha, In the Woods..., Drawn), who Daniel has described as ‘a revelation. His calmness and brilliance has helped to bring about the greatest inter-band chemistry that Anathema have experienced together in their career.’

This album will please fans who call for more of Lee Douglas’s vocals, as her role within Anathema’s brand of alternative, melodic rock has matured to become an integral energy. In this way and more, Weather Systems is the sound of a band finding their voice and growing in stature, moving further along their artistic path with a truly stunning musical vision.

Their best ever work? ‘Not yet’ says Daniel, but he does believe that with Weather Systems they have surpassed previous glories; ‘we are pleased and proud of the record and we feel that, alongside the best moments of WHBWH, this record contains our very best work so far in what is becoming a long career.’

Weather Systems will be available on Kscope from April 16th 2012."

thanks NightCreeper! I'm slightly interested, as with every Anathema album recently. imo they didn't really move forward since Judgement and that's why my enthusiasm decreases with every new Anathema record... but I'll wait an see...

Glad there will be more Lee vocals. But the artwork is less than inspiring...

Wow so awesome, a great deal of output from the band in such a short time after such a rediculous long wait between disaster and were here albums.

Thats awesome news! Very curious how the album will sound etc.

I agree somewhat with sentiments that its time for a slight change in sound and direction, although to be honest if its more of the same of WHBWH, i wont be too disappointed.

Strange album title.... unless lyrics reveal to be otherwise, the title definitely isnt as deep as WHBWH, but not that it needs to be at all.

Is more akin to 'A Natural Disaster'

The album cover is pretty cool.

Man, Im excited, didnt think we'd have another Anathema album until at least next year at the earliest, so its good to be mistaken!

Haven't moved forward? How so? While I agree that A fine Day to Exit and A Natural Disaster has somewhat similar sound, Judgement and especially WHBWH are vastly different. Both musically and lyrically.

Also, Falling Deeper is a complete break from all previous albums as well. I think Weather Systems will sound quite similar to WHBWH because of  many of the songs on it was written between AND and WHBWH, but Danny describes it as darker than the latter. We will see.

I loved WHBWH, here's to hoping this one is just as good. Except that album had a great artwork as well, this one is just bland.

How did you find out about the source image etc?

I actually think it makes for a good cover (without the dog haha) it suits the album title, the album title is more what I dont like.

It sounds too much like a book from the school library you would get out back in the day to do a report on.....weather systems haha.

I expect deeper from these guys like 'weather systems of the heart' or something like that lol.

I think "Weather Systems" refer to the various ups and downs in life. As in sunny days and stormy days.

I mean, A Natural Disaster was about cheating and breaking up with your life partner.

Haha! What matters is the music, but I thought the image was something original created for the album; kind of a bummer that it isn't...I do like it though.

Heh. Someone used TinEye over on the Anathema forums when one of the guys had it as their avatar image before it was properly announced.

I like what they've done with it; that is, the recoloring and the de-dogging. Very happy that it's coming out in only a little over 2 months, too!

For some reason when i first saw it I thought, yep another Travis Smith artwork for sure.... now that I know it isnt, it suddenly appears to me as clearly not his style at all haha.

It does suck a bit its not an original concept designed purposely for the album, but as you said, i like it anyway.

Im just so excited about this album.

Yeah i suspected maybe some lyrics on the album or something would reveal a deeper meaning behind the title. I was always sure it would be a metaphor for something like you suggested.

Cool!!

Titles of tracks 3, 4, 5 and 6 all suggestive of "weather systems" theme etc.

Only 9 tracks, I wonder if this suggests lengthy songs. I would suspect so. 6-8 min marks here and there? Time will tell.

I was lucky enough to hear a bit of Internal Landscapes on Vinny's iPhone in Philly back in May, and there is quite a bit of spoken word in it, but I'll be damned if I can recall any vocals. So you might be right. It actually might be an instrumental over all the spoken word. I do remember it being quite lengthy though. In the 8)9-12 min range I think. Not saying it will even end up being the track I heard but id bet my house it is in the end.

A friend of mine and I had the same pleasure before the DC show. I do remember Vinny saying it wasn't done though, so perhaps it will have a lot more to it than what we both heard.
