Collapse The Light into Earth vs. Feel So Low
10. Dec 2011 at 01:10

Forgive me if a poll like this already exists, but I couldn't find one. Although the poll is pretty self-explanatory I'm interested to see other users' opinions on this. Both tracks are, of course, slower paced, melancholy album closers with a great deal of classically orchestrated string arrangements, so in that sense they're similar, yet they're extremely different to me. I've always thought "Collapse..." to be the superior track. It just invokes a much more emotional response from me and musically I find it gorgeous. However I love "Feel So Low" too and am interested to see what you guys think.

This was fairly easy for me, I was never a huge fan of Feel So Low. I do however adore Collapse...

This decision would have been made alot more difficult however if you had stacked Stop Swimming up against Collapse... After all, does Stop Swimming not fit the bill of a "slower paced, melancholy album closer with a great deal of classically orchestrated string arrangements?" Wink

I believe I would have voted Stop Swimming in that particular match-up.

I'd say Collapse overall for me. I agree with 4ctmam that it is kind of boring... after a couple minutes. Whenever I listen to it I am overtaken by the beauty of the first two verses and chorus, but it drags on way to long and just bores me for the second half of the song.

Feel So Low I have never really liked. Oddly enough, LS is my favorite PT album, but contains two of my least favorite songs by them (The Rest Will Flow being the other). I do, however, like how FSL fades out and the album ends... It's always caused a moment of self reflection for me... Something about the texture and frequencies of the keyboards, along with the "Thanks."

Can't believe I forgot about "Stop Swimming".  Sad Now that people are voting I won't add it as that would be unfair, but it probably should've been included, that's for sure.

I selected Feel So Low, but this was a tough choice, and I could well vote the other way on another day.

I decided that Collapse, beautiful though it is, could do with a tiny bit more variation. Not a lot - I know it's intended to be a kind of stream-of-consciousness chant - but a few extra chord changes to give the song some kiind of sense of progression. Like Dust I Have Cleared From My Eye, for example, does this and works well as an album closer.

No, don't add it. Make a separate 2-way poll between Stop Swimming and another song.

Colapse is a masterpiece.Period.
Pitty it was not released as a single with a radio edit.
I strongly believe it would be huge.
Feel so low & Stop swimming?
Typical PT excellency, but Collapse is a rare pulsar in the music universe.

Collapse. I adore the harmonies and there's something about the song that just consumes me, takes over me. I hit repeat on it often.

Stop Swimming is on a whole other level than either of these songs for me.

Collapse by far for me - the harmonies, the lyrics, and the way it builds with the strings at the end - a beautiful and emotional song. I find Feel So Low is kinda boring in comparison.

Two other PT stand-out slow songs for me are Stop Swimming, as mentioned, but also Half-Light. These three are all excellent and I would find it hard to pick between them, though I think Collapse tops it.

Generally speaking I don't get the fascination many people here have with "Collapse the Light into Earth." I agree with whoever said it was boring. I don't think either of these songs are special (by PT standards) but I prefer "Feel So Low" between the two.

I find it interesting how there is a disparity between the posted comments and the votes. At this moment, Collapse leads Feel So Low by a large margin: 15 votes against 5. However, out of those who have chosen to post a comment, opinions are about evenly divided - I count 6 in favour of Collapse vs 4 for Feel So Low. I have noticed this in other polls too. The ones who feel motivated to post comments on the poll seem to be a different demographic to the silent majority.

Does that mean Feel So Low is more likely to be the thinking fan's choice? Tongue

Interesting point. However, 10 posters is hardly a statystic sample.

'Collapse' is beautiful, but 'Feel So Low' always brings tears to my eyes. So 'Feel So Low' it is.

I voted "incomparable" actually. I like them both, and for different reasons. The way they are structured are completely different and the aim of each song musically is different. Ask me one day I might say I like FSL better and the day Collapse the Light better
