Just after one listen and I'm not all that familiar with Marco's drumming:

1. Marco
2. Gavin
3. Gavin - Cymbal fills!!!!
4. Marco - not that sure
5. Gavin
7. Gavin - no doubt
8. Marco - not sure, not much to work with
9. Marco

Sounds interesting. I look forward to its release

Ok, I'll play too:

Track 1 @00:00 = Marco (couple snare rolls)
Track 2 @01:19 = Gavin (tom patterns)
Track 3 @02:15 = Gavin (little cymbal accents)
Track 4 @03:47 = Gavin (hard to tell)
Track 5 @05:33 = Marco (double kick/snare rolls)
Track 6 @06:53 = No Drums
Track 7 @08:32 = Gavin (tom patterns again)
Track 8 @10:17 = Gavin (drum sounds are all I'm really going on)
Track 9 @12:09 = Marco (not too sure)
Track 10 @13:12 = No Drums

I really dig the sound!  Might have to pick up a copy for myself at some point.

I got into a debate with one of my coworkers as to who was the better drummer of these two...what do you guys think?

I personally prefer GH but MM is incredible too.

They both have their strengths while neither has a real "weakness" so this is tough, but I prefer Gavin too. His snare drum work is impeccable and I think on a higher level than Marcos. However, I personally prefer Marcos hi hat work (his approach to "No Part of Me" during SW's tour was divine), even though I like Gavin's cymbal work better in general overall (some of those fills he does on the bell cymbals for example, like at the end of "Dark Matter" on the "Anesthetize" DVD). Anyway, the reason I prefer Gavin is to me, Marco is a "technical" drummer and Gavin is a "musical" drummer. This does not in any way mean that Marco can't lay down a groove and Gavin doesn't have insane chops, but Marco is more about the chops, and Gavin is more about the groove, and when he does do a whacked out fill, it's never over the top. It's also always at the correct moment in the song, and Gavin just has a perfect sense of musicality, which is why he's able to do so much improvisation without messing up the flow of a song at all.

I'll give it a shot since I slightly dissed Marco's playing.  Put my money where my mouth is - so to speak.

1)  Marco
2)  Gavin
3)  Gavin
4)  Marco
5)  Marco
7)  Gavin
8)  Gavin
9)  Marco

Off to grade myself.

OK - just graded myself and let it be known on track 3 I had Marco listed first, then second guessed myself deeming that Gavin must be playing on more than 3 tracks.  Track 3 was a toss up, but should have followed my instincts.  Stupid move.

Point being, there is a distinct style difference.  Marco attacks the snare differently (very prominent difference between the two) and presents a smaller syncopation range.  He also tends to repeat fills whereas Gavin will change up fills regularly.  But that can all be attributed to the style they chose to accompany the musical notes.   I also noticed on the live GfD recordings, and here, that Marco's fills can be slightly off in timing.

So OK, someone once told me that if critics were so good then strap on an axe, stand up and be heard.  My only purpose here is to say that there is an audible difference.  They are both professional drummers.

Track 1 @00:00 = Gavin
Track 2 @01:19 = Gavin maybe Marco
Track 3 @02:15 = Gavin for sure
Track 4 @03:47 = Marco
Track 5 @05:33 = Gavin
Track 6 @06:53 = No Drums
Track 7 @08:32 = Gavin
Track 8 @10:17 = Marco
Track 9 @12:09 = Marco
Track 10 @13:12 = No Drums

Wow. I suck.
It all pretty much sounded like Gavin to me. I was just trying to guess which ones where maybe not Gavin.

Edit: Had I listened to the full tracks I may have guessed differently.
