In Absentia - title track
06. Oct 2011 at 18:26

No, this is not a joke post. I was just pondering the fact that this is the only album that does not have a title track.

I know that it is very common in the music world to have a track that shares the name of its album, but in the case of Porcupine Tree the pattern has been adhered to so faithfully that I wondered why this album is the odd one out. For example, did Steven perhaps write a short instrumental called In Absentia, then decide it wasn't up to par or didn't fit with the album? I am thinking along the lines of a track that's little more than an interlude, in the manner of the tracks On the Sunday of Life... and Stupid Dream.

Or perhaps the joke is that the track was left off the album, so it's... In Absentia.

SW said that the expression "in absentia" appeared in the lyrics of one of the tracks that he demoed for the album. He didn't use the song but thought the expression would be a fitting title for the whole album.

Very interesting! I hadn't actually noticed that 'In Absentia' was the only record not to have a title track. My favourite of the 'title tracks' has to be 'Fear of a Blank Planet' though. Absolutely fantastic song.

I smell a "best title track" poll coming on.
I think my favourite PT title track would be Up the Downstair, though Lightbulb Sun would be a close second.

sometimes people read so far into something - it could be for no reason at all that the album "in absentia" doesn`t have a title track

Actually that's what I'd always sort of assumed.

Lightbulb Sun is my favourite title track. But it is kind of fitting that In Absentia happens to be the only PT album with an absence of a title track, hehe

What i like to think is, given the songs that made the album, had steven chosen to name the album after one of the songs, what would the album have been called!!!

So many things to consider such as:

1. what song represents the album the best?

2. Or which simply has the coolest name

3. Generally title tracks are supposed to be one of the standout tracks in terms of quality so would it have been one of the better ones (i know they are all good, but you know what I mean)

For consideration of point 1, i think either Blackest Eyes, Gravity Eyelids or Strip the Soul may be the best name
For 2, I like Prodigal as an album title, and Collapse the light into Earth is a cool album title.
For 3, well hard to say, trains for me is my favourite but probably not best album title.

I think overall i like 'Collapse the Light Into Earth' as the title track. the album closer - a nice kind of summarising song. And I reckon a cool album name.

Imagine if....

"Gravity Eyelids" would have fit well with the album cover.

True...i didnt consider the cover after all that haha.

Gravity Eyelids probably would of been my next choice anyway. Sounds like  PT album title to me. Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, Gravity Eyelids. Yep sounds right.

All is as it should be. And attempting to pretend that there is some sort of 'formula' for names is pretty silly. And, thankfully, SW has always steered clear of long, wordy album names after learning from TSMS, so that would never have happened.
