The Porcupine Tree Song Elimination Game
15. Jul 2011 at 05:46

I know the title is somewhat pretentious, and perhaps daunting, but here it is: "Porcupine Tree /// Song Elimination Game."

It's all a bit of fun and the final results carry little weight as I am aware opinions differ, daily even. Wink

You'll have the chance to vote a single song you "least prefer" out of the ones on the list provided, to save the ones you love most. We'll vote on a few albums at a time (otherwise this will take far too long). I'll list a example of how the game will work below.

I will post as a round starter:
song 1
song 2
song 3
song 4
song 5 ect.

parcipant 1 posts vote:
song 3

Participant 2 posts vote:
song 2

partcipant 3 posts vote:
song 2

(this would continue, but for the sake of your time we'll end here)

To move things along, I will post the results of the round:
song 3 - 1
song 2 - 2

(song 2 is eliminated)

Then the next round would begin with the remaining songs from the list, until...

Top 3 Album winners (always 3 remaining):
song 1
song 3
song 5

then we'd move to the next few albums in question reverse-chronologically.

(example over)

So remember, we'll vote until three songs remain on the album up for song elimination. Once we've covered all the albums, we'll eliminate the remaining songs from each until we reach a single winner. If you have any other questions or confusion let me know.

I'll keep a tally on the winners with this OP, listing the top three per album, and then the final results.

This was accomplished some time ago on a Muse fan forum, I was the thread starter but can't take credit for the idea. link: http://www.muselive.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=37624&d=0

We'll begin once I have some approval from you guys. The more participants we have, the more interesting the game. So, sound like fun? Smiley (that is to say of course, you're a glutton for punishment)

I would probably participate, as long as you keep strictly to the rule of only one vote per person per round.

I would also suggest that you specify a maximum time for each round, and declare the winner when all the participants have voted or when the time is exceeded, whichever comes first.

----------------------------

Edit: I don't think you should be able to change your vote. If someone who voted early is allowed to change their vote mid-round, why shouldn't a later voter be allowed to change theirs? Nah. Vote once, think about your vote before voting, and live with the consequences.

As a matter of fact I think the voting tally should be kept hidden until the poll closes. That would be easy to do with a standard forum poll. Set up the poll to close in a certain time, then if all the votes (or some quorum you decide) arrive before that time is up, you can close the poll early and show the results.

Fine, I see what you're saying so i'll change the rule about changing your vote. But It did make things rather interesting in the last elimination game (hotlinked above).

The poll suggestion though, while a great idea, would just cause too much confusion and clutter in this section of the forum. I don't want to have to make multiple polls for one game.

OK, fair enough, I see your point about clutter.

I don't see a lot of response from the rest of the members though.

I was hoping (and still am) for a warmer reception, this can be as fun as it is difficult once it gets going.

What aren't you 100% about? I'll answer any questions you may have. It shouldn't take too long to grasp a understanding of the game though. Smiley

We have enough signed up so far to get the game going and it's been over half a week since I pitched the idea, so let's get started shall we?

I don't know if i'll be able to make a specific deadline in moving the rounds along so we'll test the waters for now. Once voting slows i'll end the round, so get your vote in as soon as possible!

We'll start with disc one and two of The Incident. I'm leaving out both Occam's Razor and Degree Zero Liberty, unless there are any objections. Vote for the one song you least prefer out of those listed below, votes are final until the end of the round.

Round 1: The Incident

The Blind House
Great Expectations
Kneel And Disconnect
Drawing The Line
The Incident
Your Unpleasant Family
The Yellow Windows of the Evening Train
Time Flies
Octane Twisted
The Sceance
Circle of Manias
I Drive The Hearse
Flicker
Bonnie The Cat
Black Dahlia
Remember Me Lover

---

Fear of a Blank Planet

Fear of a Blank Planet
My Ashes
Anesthetize
Sentimental
Way Out of Here
Sleep Together
Nil Recurring
Normal
Cheating the Polygraph
What Happens Now?

My vote for The Incident goes to Your Unpleasant Family and for FOABP, Nil Recurring.

Why not make an actual poll of it?

that was my suggestion, but I think she has given a reason why not.

@IMoveSideways:
You could quicken the process by making the initial sets smaller, say 6 songs in a round, and have several rounds going at once, not necessarily from the same album. As songs get eliminated you could combine sets so we are always voting of sets of between 3 and 6 or so.

Still, I'll go with however you want to run it.

My vote also goes to Circle of Manias.

Bob you're right and I initially meant to do multiple albums at a time, good looking out! Smiley

I've edited my post for round 1 to featured Fear of a Blank Planet and Nil Recurring in addition to THe Incident. I've placed FOABP and Nil together due to Nil Recurring's short track listing, so get your votes in people.

I really like the other two, yes. But CoM sounds soumewhat pointless to me. Ok, I get it, they can write a bit where one guitar plays 8 bars of 9/8 while the other plays 9 bars of 8/8. So what? There's nothing musical or melodic in this track in my opinion. It sounds like it was put there just to be sure that the more metal oriented fans will have something to mosh along to. Of course, it's only my opinion.

As a matter of fact, I think Nil Recurring is a much better track than CoM, but I still think it's my least fav of the FoaBP/NR lot.

Moreover, unless bugsbite puts in his vote for the worst track on The Incident, he risks not getting counted. Vote!

So it's going to be between 6 or 7 people? Don't see much point to it really... I guess the problem now is that the thread became kind of long and possibly too long for someone who just "tuned in".

Agreed.  I know it is not the case, but with more people it would feel a lot more objective.  Great idea though.
