Damned Computer Updates... grrrr
29. Aug 2010 at 19:34

for the last three days now my computer has kept grinding to a halt under the weight of a process called wuauclt.exe which hogs my cpu for long periods. Seems it's a windows update process... but it's driving me CRAZY. I'm using XP.

Anyone else similarly suffering at the moment? undecided

Wuauclt.exe is the AutoUpdate Client of Windows Update and is used to check for available updates (for the various versions of the MS Windows platform) from Microsoft Update. The wuauclt.exe file is included in the Task Managerís list of active processes when it is waiting for a response or an action to be performed by the user.

Aside from updating a userís MS Windows-based system, the wuauclt.exe file also looks for MS Windows-based software and hardware updates. These updates can help a user avoid stability issues and even security risks or system vulnerabilities.

The Automatic update feature embedded on MS Windows can be manually turned on or off and can also be scheduled by the user. The user can proceed to Control Panel and open Automatic Updates in order to access the set of update options provided by this MS Windows utility.

Thank you E. Wink

I'd actually researched all that already. But was just mystified why I'm getting this thing constantly clogging my system. 3 days in a row. Was wondering if others are having similar activity which would suggest microsoft are sending some background fix or something, or if perhaps my update process is "confused". I can't keep going on like this, with the computer just locking up for 30 minutes every night.
Am reluctant to turn off AUTO on the updates, as I worry about vulnerability. And I'd probably forget to manually look regularly.

It's such a pain that when it gets going in freezes all other processes. IE crashes, iTunes crashes. It won't even let me close them or bring up the ctr+alt+dlt box of windows task manager. It basically hogs 99% of the cpu, which just seems a stupid way to do anything. Angry

I'm no computer specialist either, but a windows update process slowing down your Pc so badly that you can barely use it for days does not sound right to me.
There are many virusses that actually disguise themselves as windows processes, wuauclt.exe is a known alias, this may be obvious, but did you run a virus/spyware scan? (preferably in safe mode)

thanks Tako, yes I've run all my virus stuff and my Microsoft Security Essentials is not showing anything odd. It's not happened today though, so maybe it's sorted itself? I can hope.... undecided

Good luck with it, hopefully it was just a one time fluke, maybe an update went wrong and windows just kept retrying?

OS-problems are a real pain the *** when you're not an IT specialist: spending hour after hour googling and searching for a solution to a problem you barely understand instead of just using your PC to to do what you want can be extremely frustrating. (I tried Ubuntu last week which crashed a few days later after an update, I wasted 2 evenings getting everything back to normal..... Angry)

At Uni the support staff, in their wisdom, set up all the machines so that, when Windows thinks it needs to update, it says "Shutting down and restarting in X minutes" and does not give the option to cancel and do it later. Since I tended to use Windows approximately 6 times a yesr, on the rare occasion when I needed to do something that could not be done under Linux, and invariably it was something I needed to do in a hurry, that meant that almost every time I logged in to Windows I would start working away and then receive that update message.

The result of course was to make me even more reluctant to go into Windows - as if I needed any further convincing.

I can't stand it when Windows decides it wants to do an update, lets you know that you can post-pone it or do it now but gives you 30 seconds or it will restart now. If I just happen to be away for a moment then come back to find it has rebooted on me . . . . . . Or the other times where programs manage to block Windows from shutting down after I tell it to shutdown . . . . . (very annoying to come back 3 hours later and see Windows is asking me whether I want to terminate the programs).

In Linux I have everything setup so if I shutdown my machine when it boots up it opens the previously running programs etc again (a bit like recent versions of Firefox allow you to do with multiple tabs), I don't religiously close programs when I'm finished with them anymore so in Windows it's really irritating.

I have also heard from others about recent Windows updates borking systems at the moment too although I've not run into them since with my Windows systems for work I don't usually enable auto-updates.

(This is not to say that there aren't things that bug me in Linux too but wow does it just work better for me and my workflow)

I always have the automatic updates set to: "Notify me when updates are available, but don't donwload or install them." (Don't exactly know if that's how it's called in English, it's the 3d option.)
This gives you a little warning emblem in your system tray whenever there are updates available, which you can click to begin downloading and installing the updates.
