How do you feel about crowd footage on live DVDs?
06. Jan 2010 at 23:47

I've been watching some of my many concert videos lately, and I realized that I have an intense dislike of the shots some editors & directors will put in showing the crowd at the concert. It's like taking the worst part of actually being there in person and trying to integrate it with the already diminished home viewing experience.

Where do you stand?

Mostly indifferent, it doesn't really bother me but I could do without it also. I would prefer it to not be there as opposed to being there, so I'm indifferent leaning towards dislike.

I quite dislike them. It's time wasted that should have been used to show more of the band doing their stuff.

I'm OK with long shots from behind showing both the whole crowd and the stage. But close-ups of the audience... really stupid!!!

I quite like them! Makes me be into the fun. Not if they are there ALL the time. But here and there... fun!

^^This... Stage right, left, or center shots from the stage outward that happen to have audience as background are alright as well, but as far as actually filming and using footage of people who are not on the stage playing holds no point for me. Over the course of some DVD's that can add up to a whole song's worth of time!

Overall, I dislike. Some shots are o.k. but mostly I want to see the band. If there are only a few shots... Maybe a view from the back of the venue focusing on the band with incidental audience or like stated above, as long as the band is the focus.

I'm rather indifferent. I obvioysly don't like it when there's too much of it but sometimes it actually works really well. One example that comes to my mind appears on the Genesis DVD "When In Rome". If I remeber correctly in the beginning of Afterglow there is a shot of a girl with a lighter high in her hand and she has that really happy look on her face. Dunno, maybe she just looks nice but I think this really encapsulates some real emotions. And, of course, I quite like some of the audience shots on Mixtaped Wink

I never really cared about this till I found myself on Gilmour's latest DVD. It may sound silly but this 1 second camera shot right before crushing lasers in Echoes, gave me the best possible souvenir there could ever be.
So if each DVD gives a thrill like this to at least 5-10 people somewhere out there, I can bear it Wink

I'm perfectly fine with the shot of that gorgeous girl in the Way Out of Here video.  Wink I voted it's ok.

This reminds me of The Song Remains The Same and the audience shot of the attractive girl who is in total awe during Since I've Been Loving You. Obviously when the target of the camera is a beautiful woman...... Cheesy

I've actually voted indifferent. I don't think it detracts so long as it's not overdone.

I'm in the "dislike" group.  They are just a distraction to me, and often (not always) the individuals look, er, no I'd better not say.

I'll make an exception to my general dislike.  The Sigur Ros DVD Heima, where the shots of the audiences add to the atmosphere.

There isn't really a "like it" option there so I just put "love it" even though I don't.

I appreciate seeing the crowd to be honest, I like to see people getting into the music. However at the same time, I don't want to be seeing the crowd excessively to the point where it's annoying.

Rammstein's Volkerball DVD gets it just right by making you empathise with the fans' excitement, without spending too much time on audience shots.

PT's Arriving.. DVD has some good crowd moments - I particularly like the one during Hatesong where a guy at the front is watching SW play and just gives that "you rock, man" look  Cool

Really!!!??? When I voted --I loathe it-- I had precisely that DVD in mind. Particularly some moronic neanderthal in the front row who was featured more than necessary. At least the Hatesong guy is not looking constantly at the camera doing silly faces.

I like it if done tastefully and sparsely. Arriving Somewhere is a good example.

It's alright, but when the crowd is shown more than 20% of the time in the DVD, then it is excessive and then I dislike it.

I bought the DVD to watch the band, but if it's live I like to see some of the crowd for a perspective on the venue and the energy of the room.  Just enough that I know what the band is playing to.
