Favourite post-rock bands (pick 3)
16. May 2009 at 21:50

There's quite a few people on here that enjoy post-rock, but who's the bestest ever? Picking 20 bands wasn't easy so I'm expecting quite a few votes for "other". Please choose 3 bands only and feel free to elucidate Smiley

Unfortunately I haven't heard most of those bands, but I enjoy Tortoise, Explosions in the Sky, and Sigur Ros.

From the list, Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky...and maybe Russian Circles. This Will Destroy You is currently my favorite post-rock band though. Their debut is beautiful, blends some electronics in very nicely.

From the list, Sigur Ros, God is an Astronaut and Kayo Dot, although I could've easily picked 65daysofstatic, as well.

I kind of cheated.

What's Talk Talk doing in there??  I guess I can sort of see them being lumped in but I would never have classified them as Post-Rock.   Huh  BUT IF they are then they are first on the list!  Otherwise it is:

Sigur Ros
Kayo Dot
Mono

Sigur Ros MUST be seen live.  One of my favourite ever shows.  Just stunning and beautiful!

Kayo Dot blew my mind live as well.  So many elements beyond building a big noise, still retaining the same level of emotional impact and lots of proggy elements too.

Mono - well there was no Mum in there.  They should go under Post Rock too, but Love Mono.

Album leaf gets an honourable mention - yeah my third is getting a bit blurred now.  Such an amazing genre of music - one in which I love most of the bands (so far)!

My major complaint with post-rock is that it is quickly losing importance and originality, perhaps even becoming obsolete.  There are so many EitS copycat bands, or just acts that try to "perfect" the post-rock sound as opposed to adding anything new.  However, excellent groundbreaking and innovative bands do still exist in this scene, such as Grails, Tarentel, Arms and Sleepers, and Crippled Black Phoenix.

Before I got into them I saw them live at Roskilde. Well for about 10 minutes anyway before I left, because they bored me s*itless!!!  Grin

To answer proggrl's question, Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden is considered by many to be the first ever post-rock album. Stereloab and Slint also pioneered the genre back in the early 90s so they were included. I think Grails probably should have been on the list instead of Maudlin of the Well who only got on coz I love their new (free/donate) album (also currently digging the new Crippled Black Phoenix).

I think the world would be a whole lot better without classifications...... Wink

....kidding aside.....Stereolab is rather decent, but since I am out of the musical classification loop....I would have to say that very few of these bands even ring a bell.... *sighs*

Nowadays: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Russian Circles and Parhelia (although I didn't like their new album). But I don't know, it is one of my top genres, maybe in a week or two my top 3 changes.

Right now for me it's The Appelseed Cast (more of a post-punk/ambient rock hybrid), Toman (post-rock roots moving towards progressive indie) and This Will Destroy You. Checkout Graveface records, they have a good mix of different genres, including alot of post-rock like The Appleseed Cast, Toman, Daturah and Jacob.

Explosions In The Sky, Talk Talk and Mogwai!

The band 'Do Make Say Think' deserves a spot on the list up there, though! So awesome

from that list isis is my favourite but i also like red sparowes, pelican and russian circles.

there seems to be one glaring omission from the list however - neurosis, the grandfathers of all 'post rock' bands
