Who's your favorite bassist?
10. May 2009 at 11:27

I find bass too often to be a underrated instrument. Good bass playing is one of the first things I notice when I listen to music and I could even say that bass is my favorite instrument. So who's your favorite bassist?

I'm aware that there are some good ones missing from that list, but I just couldn't fit everyone in. I tried to gather the ones who I know are good, popular or just play in bands that many people listen here in PTF. I don't know every great bass player and propably forgot couple great players too, so please forgive me if your favorite isn't listed.

I made this a multi-choice poll because I thought there would be many people who can't make their mind on their favorite player. But please do try to constrain your list to your top3 or something like that. The one and only favorite would be preferred, but this isn't really a matter of life and death  Wink

And please note that your favorite player doesn't have to be the best or most technical or anything. It's just a matter of YOUR taste.

That being said, my vote goes for Victor Wooten. He's just simply awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWANfBtELlc&feature=related  <-- 'nuff said.

Mick Karn, formerly of Japan.

Imo his solo albums are nowhere near as good as albums he's done with other people, but if we're talking purely about the style I would say it's him.

And also - again imo - Colin took a lot of direction from MK, at least, in the early days.

Well as a Bass player myself I will say that the one thing I have learned is that their are many influences that I listen to that I consider great or pure geniuses.

I do like to crank up the bottom section as it is the bass and drums that can make a good song great and a great song a classic.

I have no one favorite bass player as there are so many truly  super players out there. 2 that were not on the list I will give a shout out to

Jack Bruce - Cream

James Jamerson- Motown Session Player.Every great hit Motown put out from the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations ,etc He played on.

Now to me the best I have ever seen was Ox John Entwhistle  And Geddy is absolutey fantastic Victor Wooten is great so is Roger Glover, Geezer Butler is another, that is why I don't have a favorite their are to many great ones both live and dead that have made their mark in music and I have learned a lot from all of them. Been playing Bass since the late 70's Cool

Actually I almost added Jamerson to that list, but then thought that he might not be that well known here in PTF. I tried to keep in mind what would propably be the opinion of the other forumers. Jamerson would definitely be in my own top list!

I haven't listened to Cream so I'm not familiar with Jack Bruce. I'll have to listen to some of their music sometime!

I voted for Geddy Lee, i find hes absolutely fantastic.  The bass on Malignant Narcissism on their new album is some of the best that I've ever heard, and hes in his late 50s so it shows that hes stayed one of the best out there for 35 years, and that takes a lot of skill.

Oops, definitely didn't do a top three... Well I'll choose a top 3 from the ones I chose

I've always liked Bass players, they are my favourite and no one seems to really care about them, people are always like 'omg guitarists!!!11', so I give them extra credit Smiley

1. Justin Chancellor because his bass playing is just awesome, his bass doesn't always sound like a bass in songs, he more often plays with a pick (not sure if this is uncommon or not but I thought that it was as I can't recall having seen a lot of people playing bass with a pick). He just rocks. Schism opening, enough said!
2. Geddy Lee, a bassist who also does lead vocals is good in my books haha.
3. Other - Jeff Caxide of ISIS, he fits in so well with the cohesive unit that is ISIS, it just wouldn't be ISIS without him on bass, he really adds a lot of all of their songs.

I do love Colin.
Another bassist I admire is Tom Jenkinson also known as Squarepusher.

I voted for Chris Squire and Geddy Lee, these two have been my bass heroes for most of my life, - until I first saw Yes and Rush live back in the mid-70's I didn't realise it was possible to be so expressive on a bass guitar!
There have been many great bassists since of course, but for me, these two guys were the giants in the kind of music that I grew up with.

My favourites are:

Stanley Clarke (Return to Forever & solo)
Lemmy (Hawkwind & Motorhead)
Klaus-Peter Matziol (Eloy)

A tough call to pick 25 candidate bass players, possibly easier with other instruments.

Yeah at first I thought it would be easy but quickly noticed that it's nowhere near that!  Wink There's already been mentions of several players who could easily be swapped with someone on that list. I'm a bit ashamed that I totally forgot Stanley Clarke.  embarrassed I would love to see Clarke/Miller/Wooten play here again, I couldn't go to their gig here last September because I couldn't afford that at the time. I'm a bit bummed about that (a slight understatement). That would've been bass heaven!

Tony Levin & Chris Squire are a couple of my faves, but as with these kinda polls, there are always some you think "Where is so and so....."....

Already mentioned is my ultimate bass hero - Jack Bruce!   The guy is just an absolute legend!  His bass playing is fantastic and his singing is pheonomenal too - what an amazingly under-rated and over-fkn-talented man he is!

There was a great bass player named Kai Eckhardt whom i saw a couple of times with John McLaughlin.  try this for size....  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4RWt_dyba4&feature=related  not best quality but greta solo.

Also love Les Claypool's work too - some of lines are wild!

John Wetton is another fave who really opened up bass possibilities for me - his playing and singing styles are immense - especially on the trio of King Crimson albums he appeared on - but get some of the live recordings from that era to REALLY hear him!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYPPK372xUI&feature=related   get to the 4:30 part on this and hear the doomiest bass line EVER...just a pity the whole song isn't posted there....

I also reckoned Sting was an excellent bassist when he was with The Police, and some of his earlier solo work too, but he really has balnded out in the past few years....

Also more than worthy of mentioning here...( I could add TONNES more but these are straight off the top of my head for now....)

John Paul Jones
Bruce Thomas
Geezer Butler
Percy Jones
Aston Barret
Patrick O'Hearn ( yeah i know Zappa had TONNES of awesome bassists, but i'll single out Patrick for his "Rubber shirt" solo....)
Phil Lynott

....

 Wink Wink Wink

Colin because his sound is so stylish and amazing. You can always hear it come through. Some of the most memorable musical notes in PT songs are Colin's bass lines.

I also chose other, which would be Metallica's current Bassist, Rob Trujilo. While his playing does not come through on the record as well as Colin, his style and his skill is amazing and he can definately play. He is the most entertaining bassist I have ever seen live.

All great names being mentioned, tho still one of the best bass players I've not seen mentioned.

Dave LaRue!!!!!  Mad MAD skills, this man!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcZKFmKUarc

No Mark Egan either?  Tsk.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yA_8CjfIME

I love guys like Trewavas (more so for his earlier stuff) and Chancellor for just writing off the wall bass lines.  Tom Hyatt too, cos he's awesome and adorable and plays bass lines that are WAY out of his league and makes it look easy.

Flea - for doing things with an instrument that were never meant to be done with an instrument.

And another one for being awesome and adorable but not the greatest player - Simon Gallup.

If you'd have asked me 5 years ago - I would have included Colin, but he doesn't seem to be doing much these days.  Maybe more sublties I'm missing.

Btw, Colin admitted that Karn has been an influence on him, and it can be heard in Colin's (rare nowadays) fretless playing.

Anyone and Everyone needs to pick up Jaco Pastorius' self-titled debut. Some of the best bass you'll hear in terms of musicality and taking it beyond a rhythm instrument. He only plays fretless, but you wouldn't know it. I also voted for Levin and Chancellor.

Have seen all of my favorites here sofar, except for Paul McCartney. Only for the magic he does in I Want You (She's so heavy) and the effect that song gives if you close your eyes when the bass solo starts at the end, and think of someone you love or used to love I voted for him.

Even though PT and Tool are my favorite bands, I voted for Victor, and second would probably go to Les Claypool. I can't even process Victor's bass playing, it just seems impossible. It's like three people are playing, not just him, it blows me away...

My all-time favorite though is Jack Casady (Hot Tune/Jefferson Airplane) who really moved bass out of the rhythm section and into the spotlight. While certainly not the best technically, he has always amazed me with the emotion that comes through in his playing.  Smiley

Other top favorites are Tony Levin, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Alphonso Johnson, Anthony Jackson, Oteil Burbridge (The Aquarium Rescue Unit/Allman Brothers)  and  Dave Schools (widespread Panic).

I already posted to this thread but I must add Pekka Pohjola to my list of favourite bass players. I can't believe that I forgot him. He's an amazing musician. B the Magpie is one of my favourite albums and I have listened to The Madness Subsides for over 100 times. DJ Shadow sampled this track for Midnight in a Perfect World, which is also a great song.

Mick Karn is the most obvious one missing from a list in this forum. I'm somewhat surprised that Holger Czukay, Bill Laswell and Jah Wobble haven't been mentioned here. A bit less surprised that Bootsy Collins, Tony Visconti and Doug Wimbish weren't.

Hmm if you look at the votes, it's pretty clear people are voting for people who were in bands they like...I mean, c'mon, Edwin is good and all, but not that good. Roger Waters is another example...

I said in my post that I thought that Ox was the best that I had seen but I did not register a vote because they are all great players but I am not going to vote on something like this because In my years of playing I have learned something from pretty much all of them and some that are not on this list  Cool

I also grew up listeing to Queen, so John, of course. Later Geddy Lee and Martin Mendez added. Of those not listed here - Mick Karn. Polytown was a personal ear-opener. Tongue

Cliff Burton?  Sad Anyone?
I know he is over rated as hell among Metallica fans, but I still find him as my favourite bassist. The man was an excellent musician, he wrote interesting bass lines and awwesome solos and he had an unique style, what with that Big Muff/Wah/Rickenbacker combo. AND he headbanged his arse off every night!

Also Stuart Hamm (Joe Satriani) is a big idol and influence for me. Just listen to his famous "Bass Solo". (creative name, huh) I'm not that into the Moonlight Sonata thing, but the rest is just too damn beautiful!

I just read through the whole thread and was surprised how varied list of bass players is presented here. I just counted that, besides that list of 24 players, 60 bass players were mentioned through this thread. So that's 84 in total!!

Mick Karn, Stanley Clarke and Les Claypool got at least 6 mentions each.
John Paul Jones got 4 mentions.
Jack Bruce and Geezer Butler got 3 mentions.
Mark King, John Wetton, Percy Jones, Patrick O'Hearn, Jeff Berlin and Doug Wimbish got 2 mentions.
And a whole bunch of other players I'm not going to write here got 1 mention.

And that's only so far.

I voted for Tony Levin in this list, because he is so versatile (playing stick and various kinds of basses).
Pino Palladino is another fine bass player that comes to my mind (he used to play with Paul Young in the 80s and played on countless other records, too. Fretless bass exclusively IIRC). And many others, of course, too!

Cheers

Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool, and Colin are all cool. But it came down to Geddy Lee and John Entwistle for me. Entwistle was phenomenal, but he's gone, sadly. I chose Geddy because:

1.) He's still alive.
2.) The man just does *so* many things at once. He is the ultimate multitasker. He sings, he's a stunning bass player, he plays keyboards, he hops all over the stage & never misses a beat. Geddy's just amazing, all the way around. He's still got it--and he'll be 57 this year! Few musicians are actually *not* on the decline at that age. Geddy's not even close to being on the decline, IMHO.
3.) He's quite a philanthropist. A couple years ago he donated a couple hundred autographed baseballs to the Negro League Museum here in KC. He's always doing things like that--as are Alex and Neil. They really are a great group of guys. Gotta' love Rush. Not saying others don't do things like that. I'm probably just more plugged into what Geddy's doing 'cuz I'm an ardent Rush fan.
4.) An added benefit: Can't help it, folks. I think he's hot!  Wink

Colin because his sound is so stylish and amazing. You can always hear it come through. Some of the most memorable musical notes in PT songs are Colin's bass lines.

So true. Halo's the first song that popped into my head as I read this. Halo's on my second leg wish list for a ton of reasons, but what Colin does with it is way, way up there. Smiley

Isn't he, though? When I saw them in '04, as I've stated here before, I arrived to the show late. By the time I got to my seat, I had a serious crush on that dude! lol!

I've been in love with Geddy Lee for over 30 years. The kind of love that Mother Theresa had for Jesus.

I'm surprised John Paul Jones wasn't on here! Definitely my favourite bassist.

Chris Wolstenholme from Muse is another underrated bassist I feel. His basslines are essential to the Muse sound, amazing work, have you heard Hysteria? Really?

And Colin Greenwood from Radiohead just because of Myxomatosis Tongue

And Roger Waters. Smooth bass is smooth Cheesy

I voted, first and foremost, for Colin. I may be biased since PT's my favorite band, but he's an extremely underrated bassist in my opinion. Impeccable technique and timing, and often overlooked due to the extreme talent possessed by the other members of PT. I guess the best word that comes to mind to describe how astounding his technique is would be to call it "smooth". Many bassists have more technical chops than Mr. Edwin, but I've yet to hear anyone else lay down basslines with the same smoothness and flawlessness.

My second pick would be John Entwistle, simply because his playing was so far ahead of its time. In terms of technical ability (including speed), he may actually be the best ever in the rock genre. The bass solo in "My Generation" is just so memorable and yet so perfect, no matter how many times you hear it, and that's not nearly the most complex of his parts. Amazing stuff.

Lastly, I'd pick "Other" - John Paul Jones. Again, another extremely underrated, often-overlooked musician. The bass on "The Lemon Song" really stands out for me, as it is technically flawless and compliments Bonham's groove so well, and similarly to what I said about Colin Edwin, his playing was quite "smooth". Also, his musical talents range far beyond just electric bass. One of my personal favorite multi-instrumentalists.
