Hmm if you look at the votes, it's pretty clear people are voting for people who were in bands they like...I mean, c'mon, Edwin is good and all, but not that good. Roger Waters is another example...

Why does Entwistle only have 6 votes?

I said in my post that I thought that Ox was the best that I had seen but I did not register a vote because they are all great players but I am not going to vote on something like this because In my years of playing I have learned something from pretty much all of them and some that are not on this list  Cool

COLIN EDWIN is my absolutely #1 fav of all time.
I also grew up listeing to Queen, so John, of course. Later Geddy Lee and Martin Mendez added. Of those not listed here - Mick Karn. Polytown was a personal ear-opener. Tongue

Cliff Burton?  Sad Anyone?
I know he is over rated as hell among Metallica fans, but I still find him as my favourite bassist. The man was an excellent musician, he wrote interesting bass lines and awwesome solos and he had an unique style, what with that Big Muff/Wah/Rickenbacker combo. AND he headbanged his arse off every night!

Also Stuart Hamm (Joe Satriani) is a big idol and influence for me. Just listen to his famous "Bass Solo". (creative name, huh) I'm not that into the Moonlight Sonata thing, but the rest is just too damn beautiful!

Justin from Tool by far. his unique style is magnificant and brilliant. Tool is so much better with justin instead of paul dámour

I just read through the whole thread and was surprised how varied list of bass players is presented here. I just counted that, besides that list of 24 players, 60 bass players were mentioned through this thread. So that's 84 in total!!

Mick Karn, Stanley Clarke and Les Claypool got at least 6 mentions each.
John Paul Jones got 4 mentions.
Jack Bruce and Geezer Butler got 3 mentions.
Mark King, John Wetton, Percy Jones, Patrick O'Hearn, Jeff Berlin and Doug Wimbish got 2 mentions.
And a whole bunch of other players I'm not going to write here got 1 mention.

And that's only so far.

I voted for Tony Levin in this list, because he is so versatile (playing stick and various kinds of basses).
Pino Palladino is another fine bass player that comes to my mind (he used to play with Paul Young in the 80s and played on countless other records, too. Fretless bass exclusively IIRC). And many others, of course, too!

Cheers

Geddy Lee (Rush)
Chris Squire (Yes)
Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)

I'd also like to add John McVie from Fleetwood Mac

Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool, and Colin are all cool. But it came down to Geddy Lee and John Entwistle for me. Entwistle was phenomenal, but he's gone, sadly. I chose Geddy because:

1.) He's still alive.
2.) The man just does *so* many things at once. He is the ultimate multitasker. He sings, he's a stunning bass player, he plays keyboards, he hops all over the stage & never misses a beat. Geddy's just amazing, all the way around. He's still got it--and he'll be 57 this year! Few musicians are actually *not* on the decline at that age. Geddy's not even close to being on the decline, IMHO.
3.) He's quite a philanthropist. A couple years ago he donated a couple hundred autographed baseballs to the Negro League Museum here in KC. He's always doing things like that--as are Alex and Neil. They really are a great group of guys. Gotta' love Rush. Not saying others don't do things like that. I'm probably just more plugged into what Geddy's doing 'cuz I'm an ardent Rush fan.
4.) An added benefit: Can't help it, folks. I think he's hot!  Wink

Colin because his sound is so stylish and amazing. You can always hear it come through. Some of the most memorable musical notes in PT songs are Colin's bass lines.

So true. Halo's the first song that popped into my head as I read this. Halo's on my second leg wish list for a ton of reasons, but what Colin does with it is way, way up there. Smiley

Isn't he, though? When I saw them in '04, as I've stated here before, I arrived to the show late. By the time I got to my seat, I had a serious crush on that dude! lol!

I'm surprised John Paul Jones wasn't on here! Definitely my favourite bassist.

Chris Wolstenholme from Muse is another underrated bassist I feel. His basslines are essential to the Muse sound, amazing work, have you heard Hysteria? Really?

And Colin Greenwood from Radiohead just because of Myxomatosis Tongue

And Roger Waters. Smooth bass is smooth Cheesy
