Who's your favorite bassist?
10. May 2009 at 11:27

I find bass too often to be a underrated instrument. Good bass playing is one of the first things I notice when I listen to music and I could even say that bass is my favorite instrument. So who's your favorite bassist?

I'm aware that there are some good ones missing from that list, but I just couldn't fit everyone in. I tried to gather the ones who I know are good, popular or just play in bands that many people listen here in PTF. I don't know every great bass player and propably forgot couple great players too, so please forgive me if your favorite isn't listed.

I made this a multi-choice poll because I thought there would be many people who can't make their mind on their favorite player. But please do try to constrain your list to your top3 or something like that. The one and only favorite would be preferred, but this isn't really a matter of life and death  Wink

And please note that your favorite player doesn't have to be the best or most technical or anything. It's just a matter of YOUR taste.

That being said, my vote goes for Victor Wooten. He's just simply awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWANfBtELlc&feature=related  <-- 'nuff said.

Mick Karn, formerly of Japan.

Imo his solo albums are nowhere near as good as albums he's done with other people, but if we're talking purely about the style I would say it's him.

And also - again imo - Colin took a lot of direction from MK, at least, in the early days.

Well as a Bass player myself I will say that the one thing I have learned is that their are many influences that I listen to that I consider great or pure geniuses.

I do like to crank up the bottom section as it is the bass and drums that can make a good song great and a great song a classic.

I have no one favorite bass player as there are so many truly  super players out there. 2 that were not on the list I will give a shout out to

Jack Bruce - Cream

James Jamerson- Motown Session Player.Every great hit Motown put out from the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations ,etc He played on.

Now to me the best I have ever seen was Ox John Entwhistle  And Geddy is absolutey fantastic Victor Wooten is great so is Roger Glover, Geezer Butler is another, that is why I don't have a favorite their are to many great ones both live and dead that have made their mark in music and I have learned a lot from all of them. Been playing Bass since the late 70's Cool

Actually I almost added Jamerson to that list, but then thought that he might not be that well known here in PTF. I tried to keep in mind what would propably be the opinion of the other forumers. Jamerson would definitely be in my own top list!

I haven't listened to Cream so I'm not familiar with Jack Bruce. I'll have to listen to some of their music sometime!

I voted for Geddy Lee, i find hes absolutely fantastic.  The bass on Malignant Narcissism on their new album is some of the best that I've ever heard, and hes in his late 50s so it shows that hes stayed one of the best out there for 35 years, and that takes a lot of skill.

Oops, definitely didn't do a top three... Well I'll choose a top 3 from the ones I chose

I've always liked Bass players, they are my favourite and no one seems to really care about them, people are always like 'omg guitarists!!!11', so I give them extra credit Smiley

1. Justin Chancellor because his bass playing is just awesome, his bass doesn't always sound like a bass in songs, he more often plays with a pick (not sure if this is uncommon or not but I thought that it was as I can't recall having seen a lot of people playing bass with a pick). He just rocks. Schism opening, enough said!
2. Geddy Lee, a bassist who also does lead vocals is good in my books haha.
3. Other - Jeff Caxide of ISIS, he fits in so well with the cohesive unit that is ISIS, it just wouldn't be ISIS without him on bass, he really adds a lot of all of their songs.

I do love Colin.
Another bassist I admire is Tom Jenkinson also known as Squarepusher.

I voted for Chris Squire and Geddy Lee, these two have been my bass heroes for most of my life, - until I first saw Yes and Rush live back in the mid-70's I didn't realise it was possible to be so expressive on a bass guitar!
There have been many great bassists since of course, but for me, these two guys were the giants in the kind of music that I grew up with.

My favourites are:

Stanley Clarke (Return to Forever & solo)
Lemmy (Hawkwind & Motorhead)
Klaus-Peter Matziol (Eloy)

A tough call to pick 25 candidate bass players, possibly easier with other instruments.

Yeah at first I thought it would be easy but quickly noticed that it's nowhere near that!  Wink There's already been mentions of several players who could easily be swapped with someone on that list. I'm a bit ashamed that I totally forgot Stanley Clarke.  embarrassed I would love to see Clarke/Miller/Wooten play here again, I couldn't go to their gig here last September because I couldn't afford that at the time. I'm a bit bummed about that (a slight understatement). That would've been bass heaven!

Tony Levin & Chris Squire are a couple of my faves, but as with these kinda polls, there are always some you think "Where is so and so....."....

Already mentioned is my ultimate bass hero - Jack Bruce!   The guy is just an absolute legend!  His bass playing is fantastic and his singing is pheonomenal too - what an amazingly under-rated and over-fkn-talented man he is!

There was a great bass player named Kai Eckhardt whom i saw a couple of times with John McLaughlin.  try this for size....  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4RWt_dyba4&feature=related  not best quality but greta solo.

Also love Les Claypool's work too - some of lines are wild!

John Wetton is another fave who really opened up bass possibilities for me - his playing and singing styles are immense - especially on the trio of King Crimson albums he appeared on - but get some of the live recordings from that era to REALLY hear him!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYPPK372xUI&feature=related   get to the 4:30 part on this and hear the doomiest bass line EVER...just a pity the whole song isn't posted there....

I also reckoned Sting was an excellent bassist when he was with The Police, and some of his earlier solo work too, but he really has balnded out in the past few years....

Also more than worthy of mentioning here...( I could add TONNES more but these are straight off the top of my head for now....)

John Paul Jones
Bruce Thomas
Geezer Butler
Percy Jones
Aston Barret
Patrick O'Hearn ( yeah i know Zappa had TONNES of awesome bassists, but i'll single out Patrick for his "Rubber shirt" solo....)
Phil Lynott

....

 Wink Wink Wink
