Any chance for Evolution?
26. Feb 2009 at 07:47

This is NOT the time or place to discuss Evolution please.

I was just wondering, as it's been a long time since the first Evo poll was conducted and got deleted - is there any interest in the topic still?

If so, are there any ground rules you can suggest, or where to place the topic?

If not, why?

Thankyou for your time.

First of all: Don't worry, I don't want to repeat that discussion. If you guys decide on giving it another try, I will keep out of it.

I do have one thing to say, though: Treat each other with respect and accept other people's opinions. Otherwise, this is going to end just like the "old" thread, I guess.

Funny, I just came back to this board about a week ago...

Not that it's remotely a matter of opinion.

Whatever; if others want to discuss it, I can cheerfully ignore the thread.

Along with what Ministry said, if you start it, people can choose to ignore it, or they can choose to respond.

The forum has gotten many new folks, so they can participate and express their opinion if they wish.

If this were up to me though, I wouldn't want this to be a propaganda thread, Ruler. All of us here have some types of political or religious beliefs, and of course, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Nonetheless, we all come here primarily to discuss the topics related to Porcupine Tree and side projects, and then some folks choose to participate in other threads as well.

I am just really curious, as I can't go through all of your posts - what is your connection to the band? Favorite songs/ albums? Do you have any strong dislikes towards the band (that's fine too)? I've just never seen your posts anywhere but on this topic, and that does not help your case.

As I say, by no means can I call the shots here - just simple curiosity.

I voted No After the last Fiasco which I am glad I did not participate in  and what happened in that one Ain't one enough. Have not people learned some kind of lesson by what went down the last time this subject was brought up.

Listen I don't care one way or another what you believe in  Nobody here was  alive 4/12 Billion years ago to know the truth so Everything is speculation what you believe is your belief I could not change anyones personal thoughts on this   and no one could change mine so let's just keep it that way. Cool

Watching this was clearly a mistake as I got interested again for a while. Still not up for another thread though.

I would like to see the results of the poll and how my vote counted.
Otherwise it is like the past thread:

Opinions did not count = This is not the right forum for this poll.

Well, I never mind sharing my opinion. I've always thought that politics and religion are 2 extremely important topics and that people should not be afraid to discuss them. Religion, or how a person defines their morality, expresses a lot about them, whether they want it to or not. Politics, like or not, shapes the communities we live in, locally and nationally and I believe in being active. I write to my representatives VERY often. We all have to share the place we live in, why not help to shape it, at least state your wishes?

A representative is their to make sure their districts voice is heard through voting. If the citizens do not make their beliefs and needs heard, then the representative will do what they think best, or what the government thinks best. We get what we put in, which is sadly, usually nothing. Speak up!

More importantly, people should respect others opinions and beliefs. Sharing as a way to get to know each other, maybe offer something different or new, is not bad. Pounding on someone's belief or opinion, putting them down, that is wrong and unfortunately many people can not help themselves.

That said, I am a newer member and never participated in this topic.

I voted no. I have a particular (or several) belief. I do believe in God. Most religions believe in God and in a creation, albeit differently.

I saw a program recently on the BBC presented by a Christian evolutionist. It was very interesting to say the least.

Ahhh, an Evolution thread...yummy.
For anyone remotely interested in evolution I'd like to point them in the direction of Richard Dawkins book "The greatest show on Earth" which I'm reading at the moment. I've also read other books that cover this subject of which I have a wide interest for.
But Dawkins book is a real eye opener. If its the last thing you do please read this book, its fabulous.

Obviously evolution is a very emotive subject for various reasons. I'm new here, what happened the last time it was discussed?

Something to ponder over....40% of a certain powerful western developed nation which shall remain nameless believe the planet is between 6000 to 10,000 years old. This figure is 16% in Europe and 8% in the UK. This is a statistical fact. I find these figures staggering in the modern technological advanced era which we live in today.

All hell broke loose

About 3 or 4 creationists vs lots of evolutionists. And not all creationists came from that powerful nation; at least one or two belong to that 8%.

I don't understand why so much turmoil should be caused by a scientific fact. Nobody throws up arms in protest of gravity or nuclear fission; why should evolution be treated any differently?

Wow, that's what I used to believe years ago, although it was 1967 instead.

Exactly. Evolution is a bare fact as much as gravity is and no more unusual than the sun rising in the morning or setting in the evening. Dont know what all the fuss is about to be honest. Its there, its happening before our very eyes albeit at snails pace unless artificial selection by mankind intervenes such as dog breeding for example. Get over it and move on, simple.
I find it amazing that some folks question a process that has given them ability to communicate the question in the first place.
Its like saying you dont believe that cows exist whilst tucking into a big fat juicy 16oz steak.

Well... The problem is that evolution gives no facts about the origin of life/matter.

Its not meant to.  It describes how live changes over time, not how it originated.  That's like saying the problem with Special Relativity is that it doesn't describe why the speed of light is what it is.
