Easily the 70s, followed by the 90s, then the 60s...

Can't really judge this decade though until we're a few years past it.

Musically speaking, that IS an historic decade for rock. It coincides with when psychedelics first hit the scene, just listen to the change in music practically overnight.

Agreed. While there were some good bands, I'd say the volume of "good" music to come out in the 80s was significantly less than the 70s or 90s. I actually was thinking about this the other day and I think the 80s could've been a lot more bearable if it wasn't for that terrible and cheesy production style that ruined nearly everything (luckily there are a handful of artists who seemed to be immune to it, like REM and Peter Gabriel.

Wouldn't 1967 to 1977 be even better?  No, I'm not being arbitrary...I just think it'd be better to include the seminal year for punk as well as the seminal year for psychedelic.

1977 was the year for punk music.  Many bands had their debuts released in that year, although quite a few of them had been around since the earlier part of the seventies playing clubs in New York.

The 70's was album muzak..

The 80's singles muzak.. (a lot of cheap stuff, but a lot of good stuff as well!!)

The 90's were..  well.. virtually nothing really. A total emptines.. faceless.. a void.. Almost completely ruled by the record companies.. Smiley (apart from PT, but that goes without saying)

I think a lot of people must be judging the 80s by the retro 30-somethings nightclub fad of a few years back. That's the only way you could write off the decade that gave us Porcupine Tree, no-man, Marillion, Cocteau Twins, Wolfgang Press, Pixies... some established artists put out some of their best music in the 80s, including Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, The Cure, Police, U2. This is without straying off into the real underground, heavy metal or new wave scenes, all of which were especially fertile due in a large part to independent distributors coming of age. What an awesome decade. But I don't have a favorite.

The 90s were good too, though admittedly, that which was good was further from the mainstream than in previous decades.

Indeed! I'm listening to 80s Metallica, one of my favorites of the 80s. Every decade in the poll has something I loved.

This decade Cool
PT rules it
but they are just one band...
I haven't checked out enough of the new bands recommended by PT fans yet to validate a vote for the 2000's  so I cant vote for it...YET Wink

the classic rock period of the 70's aerosmith zep black sabbath blue oyster cult etc...were extremely responsible for shaping my teen years

so that was my vote

...so I guess the  70's and 80's were my favorite decades just for the reason that period of my life combined with the music of that time bring back the memories of partying and fun...but the 70's were the best times for me
and the "ME" decade was fun for a limited run... Cool

that and the 70's were the soundtrack of my life
I have a soft spot for the 80's ....4 or 5 of my favorite bands are from that period

I can't pick just one...
for me..the 90's were hit or miss for the most part..so no vote there

This is very perceptive. When peopletalk about the music of the 60's they often fail to acknowledge that there was a big change, starting about 1965, from your Neil Sedaka/Dion and the Belmonts/ Bobby Vee kind of bubblegum to really interesting sounds coming from both sides of the Atlantic. (And before anyone jumps on me, yes I know the term "bubblegum" didn't get used until later, but bubblegum was there much earlier, it simply wasn't called that.) The Moody Blues, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes... they all started in the "Sixventies" - and so many established bands like tThe Beatles and the Stones did (IMO) their best work in that decade. And I'm not a metal fan, but for those who are, didn't Black Sabbath kick things off around 1968?

Likewise the 1970s shouldn't really be spoken of in one breath.  It seemed to me that basically up until about 1976 there was a continuation and progression of what had gone before - then around 1977 the disco craze kicked in - 'nuff said - and then Punk arrived and things were never going to be the same again, which was a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view.

The 80s saw a lot of creativity, but they also saw a lot of overuse of electronics just because it was there. It was however a great time for rock in Australia, with lots of artists giving away the idea of trying to sound like overseas bands, and in the process finding their own voice and being accepted here and overseas.

The 90s - moments of brilliance, as always, but WAY too much (c)rap, hip-hop, trip-hop, skip-hop or whatever, far too much danceable music with no substance. Sure Porcupine Tree and other great bands were there, but when did you ever hear them?

Already I think the early 21st is shaping up as an improvement on the late 20th. I have a feeling that rise of Internet radio will bring with it much more diversity in what people are able to seek out and listen to. That can only be a good thing.

Difficult to choose but if I have to go for it then it has to be the 70's, when everything really started to happen. And it was during my formative years... ah those were the days!!! Cool

Now, the 2000s. Only because this is the decade I discovered PT, and it is the most fun and enjoyable time of my life that I have ever had listening to music....because of PT and various side projects that branch out from its members.

Current decade, then 90s, then 70s, then 80s.  I only like a handful of 60s songs, primarily by The Beatles.

Same here.  Sometimes I'm in the mood for some classic 70's rock or prog-rock, sometimes I'm in the mood for a bit of 80's techno/pop. SOMETIMES, I'm in the mood for some current stuff.  Maybe the 90's doesn't do much for me, but I'm sure I can find a load of bands from that era that I adore.

The knee-jerk reaction would be t say the 70's, cos that's what I grew up with, but there is stuff coming out today I love just as much, and it really wouldn't be a fair assessment.  The only fair one for me is: whatever I'm in the mood for!   Wink

Late 60's PF Sid Barrett vintage, I like also British blues, John Mayall, EC, Peter Green, early Who, kinks, yardbirds, doors, ZAPPA, etc.
I like all decades, 70's, 80's, 90's & current. Every decades had talented and terrible musicians. I would say that my least favorite period, with the exception of great & outstanding artists during those times, was the 80's and very early 90's. The sixties and seventies had ugly music as well.
I may add that people looked funny in the 70's and 80's. Huh

Catchy name, yes, but I won't support the idea of a "best decade" that does not include 1966. Smiley

1990s/2000s because most the music I like is from this period.

Followed closely by 1970s because the music I like from our current period was mostly inspired music from this period.

I'd have to say the 70s, although in terms of what got played on the radio the 60s were much more interesting. By the 70s, what was broadcast was some of the worst of what was available. The 80s were a bit better as far as airplay.

I like music from all decades, but my vote is for the 70s. All the amazing jazz fusion bands, the progressive rock bands, the "classic rock" bands, Zappa's best period ... what a great decade it was.

My favorite music period is of course 2009!!! Everything prior to that is, like, sooooo old and bad. Like, yeah.

80s is the worst IMHO.

But the 80's had New Wave..  what did the '90's have..?? Huh

Great bands?

80's was the last decade of widespread original music in my opinion. After the 80's everyone got on the retrospective boat and has stopped since. yawnnnnnnn.

I voted 2000's. So many newer and new bands. For me this decade has turned a corner from the crap music of the 90's (with exceptions obviously).

The 90's were so empty. A kind of no mans land.

I agree about the 80's with DrGoon. Great decade, a lot of great music, especially if you are a metal fan.

Also like the 70's very much. Excellent decade for prog!

In my life since I was a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's I would say the 70's as that was my High school Years and that was when I was exposed to all those great bands from Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Rush,Even during the crappy Disco years , the mid and late 70's you still had bands like the Clash, Talking Heads , Sex Pistols, the Cars, Ramones, Televison, Roxy Misic, Ultravox

I would then go from the mid 60's  from the 1st British Invasion Beatles, Stones, The Who, Kinks, The Animals, then on the US Side you had the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, and even thou Jimi Hendrix went to england to make it big there 1st he is an American and I 1st heard about him in 68-89 Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Deep Purple,Led Zeppelin

Then the 80's Lots of great bands and  during the early part of the 80's saw the next change in the scene from New Model Army, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Lords of the New Church, Depeche Mode, Flock of Seagulls, Talk,Talk, Bauhaus, The Smiths, some really great music.

in the 90's well Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Tool, and of course PT so this decade had some great music coming out.

Then I would say this decade But I only say this one last as most of the bands I listen to came from the other decades and if they are still putting out music then they have survived Cool

I choose 90's but could have been also 00's. Although I think the 70's is The Music Decade, I'm a big fan of effects and all stuff like that, which in the 90's evolved significantly.

90's I believe.  But also the 2000's. A lot.

But the 90's is just a gold mine of nostalgia  Grin

Agreed wholeheartedly!  The 90s are my favourite decade just for the nostalgia, I swear.  And PT and NIN, of course. Grin
[I actually found some episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark? on YouTube recently and have been revelling in the cheesiness of one of my favourite shows that I grew up with XD]

70s would have to come in third behind 90s and 2000s, though.  I wish I'd been alive back then so I could've seen so many of the classic rockers in concert at their prime, and some of them [like Zappa] who are no longer with us.. sigh.  Maybe someday, someone will invent the time machine.. but then again, if it were ever to happen, we'd have already seen evidence of it because there would've been history of strange-looking people going back in time all over the place, right? Tongue Yay, philosophy!  But sigh, no FZ concerts for me.  RIP to one of the greatest musical geniuses ever. <33 Sad

Depends if you think 2010 is the first year of a decade or the last year of the previous, so I'll play safe and say the 70's - lovely vintage prog, brilliant disco and a few heart-breakers too.

My vote goes for the 70s, lots of the stuff I like either started a little before or during and had great years during the 70s. I'd say the 80s had the most bad music although some good stuff happened too, 90s and 2000s have had some great stuff and a lot of poor stuff too. I'd say late 90s and early 2000s had some pretty horrible stuff.

These days I don't have much of an idea of how pop music in general is going though, I barely know any of the current pop music, I know more about the artists because of the controversy around them than their music (I suppose that's common with pop music but now it's at the point where I don't know any of their music at all).

The latter half of the 60s is easily the greatest non-classical musical period of the past century and it frightens me that the 60s have received so few votes (though, admittedly, the 1965-75 period was probably the best full decade).

I think the problem is that "the 60s" conjures up thoughts of Neil Sedaka, Dion and the Belmonts, Tommy Roe, 1910 Fruitgum Company etc. The massive difference between the first and second half of the 1960s makes it almost impossible to give the decade a meaningful rating.

Regarding the decade just past, check out these two appalling lists:
ARIA 2000-2009 Top 100 Singles
ARIA 2000-2009 Top 100 Albumss
I knew the music scene, as gauged by what made the charts and got played on radio, was pretty lean. but I had not realised it was quite so abysmal, so EMPTY of music worth remembering.

Now, I realise that every decade has had its great music and its crap, but I think the difference is that in earlier decades - certainly up to and including the 1980s - plenty of good stuff made the charts along with the crap. These days there is still good music being made, but it doesn't seem to hit the charts.

Guy Sebastian at No. 1;  good grief. cry

The singles chart has possibly 10 songs that I actually enjoy enough to leave them playing on the radio rather than switch stations - of which the best by far (IMO) is Viva la Vida, way down at No. 71.
