Easily the 70s, followed by the 90s, then the 60s...

Can't really judge this decade though until we're a few years past it.

There is no way I can vote; you're missing the best one: the Sixventies (1965-1975) by far the greatest decade for rock music ever! Wink

Musically speaking, that IS an historic decade for rock. It coincides with when psychedelics first hit the scene, just listen to the change in music practically overnight.

Agreed. While there were some good bands, I'd say the volume of "good" music to come out in the 80s was significantly less than the 70s or 90s. I actually was thinking about this the other day and I think the 80s could've been a lot more bearable if it wasn't for that terrible and cheesy production style that ruined nearly everything (luckily there are a handful of artists who seemed to be immune to it, like REM and Peter Gabriel.

Wouldn't 1967 to 1977 be even better?  No, I'm not being arbitrary...I just think it'd be better to include the seminal year for punk as well as the seminal year for psychedelic.

1977 was the year for punk music.  Many bands had their debuts released in that year, although quite a few of them had been around since the earlier part of the seventies playing clubs in New York.

The 70's was album muzak..

The 80's singles muzak.. (a lot of cheap stuff, but a lot of good stuff as well!!)

The 90's were.. well.. virtually nothing really. A total emptines.. faceless.. a void.. Almost completely ruled by the record companies.. Smiley (apart from PT, but that goes without saying)

The twothousandzeroes. "what else"?

Best decade also in my opinion: the 70s.
The 80s would have been much worse without metal!

I think a lot of people must be judging the 80s by the retro 30-somethings nightclub fad of a few years back. That's the only way you could write off the decade that gave us Porcupine Tree, no-man, Marillion, Cocteau Twins, Wolfgang Press, Pixies... some established artists put out some of their best music in the 80s, including Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, The Cure, Police, U2. This is without straying off into the real underground, heavy metal or new wave scenes, all of which were especially fertile due in a large part to independent distributors coming of age. What an awesome decade. But I don't have a favorite.

The 90s were good too, though admittedly, that which was good was further from the mainstream than in previous decades.

Indeed! I'm listening to 80s Metallica, one of my favorites of the 80s. Every decade in the poll has something I loved.

This decade Cool
PT rules it
but they are just one band...
I haven't checked out enough of the new bands recommended by PT fans yet to validate a vote for the 2000's  so I cant vote for it...YET Wink

the classic rock period of the 70's aerosmith zep black sabbath blue oyster cult etc...were extremely responsible for shaping my teen years

so that was my vote

...so I guess the  70's and 80's were my favorite decades just for the reason that period of my life combined with the music of that time bring back the memories of partying and fun...but the 70's were the best times for me
and the "ME" decade was fun for a limited run... Cool

that and the 70's were the soundtrack of my life
I have a soft spot for the 80's ....4 or 5 of my favorite bands are from that period

I can't pick just one...
for me..the 90's were hit or miss for the most part..so no vote there

This is very perceptive. When peopletalk about the music of the 60's they often fail to acknowledge that there was a big change, starting about 1965, from your Neil Sedaka/Dion and the Belmonts/ Bobby Vee kind of bubblegum to really interesting sounds coming from both sides of the Atlantic. (And before anyone jumps on me, yes I know the term "bubblegum" didn't get used until later, but bubblegum was there much earlier, it simply wasn't called that.) The Moody Blues, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes... they all started in the "Sixventies" - and so many established bands like tThe Beatles and the Stones did (IMO) their best work in that decade. And I'm not a metal fan, but for those who are, didn't Black Sabbath kick things off around 1968?

Likewise the 1970s shouldn't really be spoken of in one breath.  It seemed to me that basically up until about 1976 there was a continuation and progression of what had gone before - then around 1977 the disco craze kicked in - 'nuff said - and then Punk arrived and things were never going to be the same again, which was a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view.

The 80s saw a lot of creativity, but they also saw a lot of overuse of electronics just because it was there. It was however a great time for rock in Australia, with lots of artists giving away the idea of trying to sound like overseas bands, and in the process finding their own voice and being accepted here and overseas.

The 90s - moments of brilliance, as always, but WAY too much (c)rap, hip-hop, trip-hop, skip-hop or whatever, far too much danceable music with no substance. Sure Porcupine Tree and other great bands were there, but when did you ever hear them?

Already I think the early 21st is shaping up as an improvement on the late 20th. I have a feeling that rise of Internet radio will bring with it much more diversity in what people are able to seek out and listen to. That can only be a good thing.

Difficult to choose but if I have to go for it then it has to be the 70's, when everything really started to happen. And it was during my formative years... ah those were the days!!! Cool
