Let's settle this properly. Best animated comedy?
14. Oct 2007 at 11:24

Since the poll between Family Guy and American Dad turned to a brawl between series, most of which weren't even in the original poll, I decided to create a new one with all of those series to settle this matter. Probably someone's favourite was still left out but these five arose in the original topic.

While The Simpsons get cult classic status, I will always enjoy Invader Zim.
P.S.
I know I.Z. is a now defunct Nickolodeon show..........

Futurama just barely edges out South Park, for me. Although now that SP has turned to crap, and with Futurama coming back soon...Futurama is the reigning king.

Futurama by far. South Park is very funny and clever (at times) but Futurama has heart and characters I care about.

My poll was fine, there was no brawl  Sad lol, anyway it's a difficult choice between South Park and Family Guy, but I think Family Guy gets my vote! Wink

I voted for The Simpsons as a series, but the animated show that has me rolling on the floor the most is SGC2C.

Aw shucks. I forgot all the AdultSwim series. Which is really shameful since I watch a lot of them. Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken, etc. etc. Well, the Other-option is losing anyway so doesn't probably matter.

I've only ever seen The Simpsons, so didn't vote.  I will say, though, that I thought the South Park intro to Tom Sawyer on the currect Rush tour was great.

I hardly ever watch those shows but however, The Simpsons has lasted so long and it still stands alone amongst the rest.  It is a forever classic and you can get your fill of laughter therapy to recover from a bad day.

Altough I voted for Family Guy at this time, I don't know if it will beat South Park in the long run.

South Park gets first place for sheer, Oh your god I can't believe they just did that, effect.                                               Family Guy is in a 2nd place three way with American Dad and Simpson.                                                                           Futurama is a very close 3rd.                                                  Drawn Together wasn't on your list but it's really funny in a Ren and Stimpy sort of way.

I voted Simpsons for the heights it reached in its prime and its iconic status.  It clearly is not longer at its peak but that is life.

After that I would go Futurama and then South Park.

Also really enjoy Family Guy.

I can't believe American Dad got a vote against this competition.  I would rate that one way after the above and several cartoon network numbers like Sealab 2021.

'Monkey Dust' is by far the best animated comedy. Space hoppers, suicidal fathers, and West Brom-supporting terrorists. Essential viewing for anyone who wants to learn more about Britain.

Futurama!

Futurama has consistently been the best out of the shows listed...and the new DVD Bender's Big Score is great! Never fails that good tv gets canceled but GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! that we get more Futurama for at least the next couple years via DVD and I heard Comedy Central will air the new movies split up into episodes.

Though I haven't had a chance to see a lot of Adult Swim in recent years...I love Harvey Birdman AaL, but never get to see frequently enough....and well there are some older shows like Animaniacs, Freakazoid, The Critic...

south park, hands down.  I really like the simpsons as well (who doesnt?). I just think south park is sooo brilliant at times. the way they incorporate certain issues of today and give their unsalted opinions ( to which i agree most of the time).

BTW there were 2 series that were on the comedy channel besides South park one was Tripping the rift. that one was very funny. you might catch a rerun late nite sometime it was only on for 2 seasons.

The other is still on The name escapes me at this moment. It is about 6 different cartoons living in a house  Real world style and shows the dynamics of the group living.Very funny and very adult rated  Grin. As they say these are not the cartoons for the kiddies Cheesy

It was "Drawn Together".

I caught it a few times, funny but I think Adam Corollo, who I'm not a big fan of, and he was one of the voices, detracted from me liking the show that much...not to mention I didn't have time to watch much tv either  Roll Eyes Tongue

Has anyone heard that the Family Guy episode Blue Harvest is coming out on DVD soon (maybe it's out now) I think I might have to buy it. It's hysterical. It's the Starwars story told with the Family Guy characters.  Stewie is Darth Vader and Brian is Chewbaca Grin Grin Grin

I've seen clips of it, and definitely want to see the whole thing (and not dubbed, as nearly all cartoons from the US are in my country)!

And also (Randal if you're reading this thread), there's a quick reference to Doctor Who! (the only part I've seen of the ep, yep its funny!)

The Flintstones.

I specially liked Barney, and the way in which he always seemed to get his comeuppance over Fred, who despite calling Barney his "ol pal ol buddy"  always treated him as an inferior. Also loved the imaginative use of prehistoric animals as the substitute for machines.

Voted South Park. I grew tired of the Simpsons for some reason.
Yet my personal favourite is Ren & Stimpy. At least those created by John K.

I simply can't laugh about American Dad/ Family Guy. Somehow I find those comedies very lame.

Indeed, early Ren&Stimpy with John K's sick mind,

but also Duckman. Which was pure genius.

Of those listed, Family Guy takes it hands down.

The Simpsons is just plain boring and I've never seen Futurama or American Dad.

Both Family Guy and South Park are great. If I had to choose my favorite it would probably be FG. They might steal a lot of their jokes, but I can still laugh about it. And sometimes South Park's voices get on my nerves. Tongue

I used to love The Simpsons, but it's easily gotten rather dull. It can still be good, but nothing makes me laugh quite like Futurama and Family Guy!
I think Family Guy gets my vote, though I love both very dearly.

Not a fan of South Park.

My vote goes for Family Guy.
I do like Simpsons, great show, especially the newer seasons, but Family Guy falls much, much more into my taste. Damnit I love that show, everything in it is just perfect.

The Simpsons....of course!
The earlier shows....years 1-5 in my opinion are the best.

I agree. I'm bored with watching Americans celebrating their own stupidity. Let's face it, that's pretty much what the majority of these cartoons have in common.

Early Simpsons episodes were the best (seasons 1~9) but they're really crap lately. I watch a lot of Family Guy, again that can be hit and miss. I don't watch a lot of South Park, but I do enjoy it when it's on.

I'm voting Futurama, because I love the characters and it never fails to make me laugh. Plus it has Zoidberg, who's a legend.

Family Guy gets my number one vote...but i'm starting to get back into Futurama. I don't think I appreciated it enough when I used to watch it several years back.

My favorite was 'Ren and Stimpy' with a big shout out to 'Jimmy Neutron'

Recently watched through Archer -- pretty close to my favorite now.

For those who are unfamiliar, think James Bond + Arrested Development.

I must have voted in this poll and failed to comment. My bad.

Anyway, hands-down my vote goes to South Park. 15 years in and although many (meaning the entire internet) seem to disagree every episode is still not only relevant to American culture, society and politics (I've always thought SP to be more social satire than political satire like The Colbert Report for example, but they'll occasionally touch on political issues), but laugh-out-loud funny throughout. The recent "1%" episode is a perfect example of this. I for one am glad Trey and Matt decided to keep it going until 2016. It's not like they'll ever run out of material unless Americans stop doing stupid stuff, following stupid fads, etc. Anyway, the Simpsons, due to seniority over every other animated series (let alone animated comedy) could've been my number one as well, but I'd be basing that off the first 11 seasons or so, the movie, and the occasional moment of brilliance post season 11, which is where I personally lost interest. South Park is more consistent with quality (and remarkably so with their down-to-the-minute production schedule) and less boring with age/time. South Park, as well as The Simpsons, are both incredible cultural phenomena that will never be forgotten as far as their legacy goes, but South Park also won't be remembered for as many "bad" episodes as The Simpsons. I admit South Park is far from immune to these "bad" episodes however.

Also, worth noting, Futurama ranks a close third out of everything on this list for me, despite having honestly never given more than half an episode the light of day (the characters and premise simply aren't as appealing to me as Groening's other popular show). This is because I despise Seth MacFarlane and everything he touches. In fact as much as I loved South Park I wasn't an avid follower of it until they ripped Family Guy. The guy's brand of humour is akin to taking the most immature childish elements from the early (crappy) 1-2 seasons of South Park, but getting rid of the funny way that South Park would deliver these elements and instead delivering them the way a 12 year old A.D.D. girl on coke would. Plus he cannot write a story to save his life. If there's one thing Trey Parker has mastered it's the script writing/storytelling aspect, along with many other things that make a great comedy series, like comedic timing, etc. Seth and his team write such appalling stories they relied on an 8 minute live action cutaway of a live performance of Conway Twitty instead of legitimate plot development during those minutes, or even legitimate humour for that matter. Plus, to make matters worse, he's been trying too hard to be South Park since they criticized him. In other words, he's been trying to incorporate political and social satire into Family Guy as well, and failing miserably may I add. The South Park guys, while Libertarians, so naturally leaning slightly to the right, generally satirize an issue itself while lampooning both sides. Seth MacFarlane's idea of political satire is "I'm a Hollywood liberal blindly following everything the Democratic party does without question and if you're not doing the same you're subhuman". So, using his once apolitical show as a soapbox for his own politics, while rarely ever generating laughs doing so. American Dad is no different. There's just a flamboyant (and terribly annoying and unfunny) alien (really Seth?) in place of Stewie (who has transformed from a twisted genius to a terribly annoying, flamboyant, and unfunny talking baby himself) and a pet goldfish instead of a dog. While The Cleveland Show is just the least funny and least entertaining character from the main 4 guys, with a family which is nothing more than the Griffins, but African American. Plus, the family structure and the characters' personalities and voices themselves (at least Peter's and Lois') are downright plagiarized from The Simpsons. I personally fail to see how MacFarlane's simple-minded humour (or lack thereof) could appeal to anyone over the age of 13, and I honestly don't see how the guy is famous and making millions to further dumb down the American people. I'm not saying South Park is the most enlightening thing one could watch but it's light-years ahead of any of Seth's shows, that's for sure.

South Park has become far more soap box-y than Family Guy could ever be. Either that or a really old formulaic rehash. I could write this week's Cartman Show, I mean South Park, episode, watch: Cartman uncovers absurd conspiracy, attempts to shock viewers with racial slurs/over the top violence. Stan and/or Kyle are, for whatever reason, at odds with Cartman's agenda. Randy takes off his shirt after saying "n'oh my gahd" dramatically. Insert unsubtle and not clever references to people in the headlines at the moment. And... credits.

I love South Park but it has gone to beyond crap. I narrowed it down -- while there are signs things are getting bad for a while, it doesn't become unbearable until about mid 10th season. I wish Parker and Stone and Comedy Central would stop milking this dead cow and do something funny again.

And for the record, I'm not defending Family Guy, don't care for it terribly much. I just really, really hate what South Park has become.
