I love Caddyshack, for sports movies that's right up there.
Airplane's good.
It's popular but Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a classic.

those are a few I can watch the entire way through and laugh the entire time.

There's a movie coming out in September, Trailer Park Boys: The Big Dirty  which will probably easily become one of my favorites.  You Canadians should know what I'm talking about!

Another vote for This Is Spinal Tap

I'm also rather fond of Raising Arizona, Monty Python And The Holy Grail, and Young Frankenstein.

Tap is awesome but I would have to go with Holy Grail and Something About Mary as my personal top two comedies.

I actually saw Spinal Tap in concert back in the early 90s!  Smiley

Can't tell you how envious I am. Was just a kid then but I was totally blown away when I saw them at the Freddie Mercury Tribute (I noticed they were funny, but didn't know much about them at that point).

Back to films. Yes, pretty much anything by Monty Python is pure genius. I'd also like to add the series Police Squad!, and kind of subsequently Naked Gun as well (though it wasn't nearly as good as the series).

Pink Panther movies.  Peter Sellers was hilarious and I still watch them from time to time.  Another funny movie with him is "The Party".  I totally recommend this movie to anyone who likes him.  Basically (and this is not a spoiler) he is accidently invited to a party.  When he gets there, all hell breaks loose!!  Grin

Dr. Strangelove is definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it.  I'm not sure any of the roles are serious in there but they are a lot meatier than Airplane acting.  Not that there is anything wrong with Airplane, Naked Gun, etc.

Speaking of Kubrick and Sellers, they also made Lolita together. Although Sellers appears only in a few sequences, he's very good in there as well.

You've got to see Being There - a career high IMHO and I'm a major Sellers fan.

Hmmm, in other comedies, what do I like?

Monty Python (Brian/Grail etc)
Marx Brothers
The League Of Gentlemen's Apocolypse
Shaun Of The Dead
The Producers (Original)

I used to love Mel Brooks films, but I think a lot of them have dated very badly - watched History of the World Pt 1 recently and barely raised a titter Wink

I've missed loads, but as usual, the mind has gone blank

It's based on the 1973 book of the same name by William Goldman, Inigo Montoya is one of the characters;
"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Possibly my best remembered funny movie (VERY quirky) is Christopher Guest's "Waiting for Guffman".

I didn't see that movie before, generally anything with Christopher Guest in is very watchable; This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and Best In Show to name a few. I'll have to keep an eye out for it Smiley

What about the Boulting Brothers films from the late 50's starring Ian Carmichael - Privates Progress and the classic School for Scoundrels.

The Princess Bride

Got to be one of my most favourite films ever Smiley

I'm starting to think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't care for The Princess Bride. I've seen it twice and still think it's sh*te.

And also: Austin Powers is overrated. The first one was good, but the 2nd one was basically a rehash of all of the jokes from the first one, and the third was...just meh. Mike Myers was best in Wayne's World (and especially Wayne's World 2...quite possibly the only good sequel ever made).

I'll go for:

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Gregory's Girl

Interesting that one of my pics has been mentioned here without being a comedy favorite. It's not just Sellers that's hysterically funny in this one. It's parts like George C. Scott's and Slim Pickins' that turn up the laughs. And its best if there's a foil for comedy - in this case very dark and frightening vision.

Gregory's Girl is a charming, awkward and provincial (Scottish) romantic comedy. Neither the humour nor the situations seem forced. It's funny in the way that life is. And Dee Hepburn is stunningly gorgeous. Smiley

(but there are so many to pick from... many listed above, as well as stuff like Arsenic and Old Lace, The Italian Job, High Fidelity...)

Dumb and Dumber is a classic.

Chris Farley movies kick ass...

Tommy boy
Black sheep

Benchwarmers was pretty damn funny too.

Shaun of the dead became an instant classic for me.

i'm not sure if ed wood counts as a comedy but it is pretty funny. the scenes with martin landau as bela lugosi are hillarious.

...and i can't believe nobody mentioned see no evil, hear no evil.

also, raptor. not really a comedy but absolutely hillarious. it's an awesomely bad b movie about, well, raptors in modern day. the best part though, is that the movie is made up almost entirely of edited clips from three other b movies about dinosaurs in present day (carnasaur 1 through 3). i bought it used for 6.99 from a blockbuster here and the cashier told me that he had actually made a bet with one of his coworkers that nobody would buy it and that i had just made him lose money. so i went to my friends house and a bunch of us watched it there. we were laughing so hard the cops had to come and tell us to be quiet. if you're into awful, awesomely bad b movies i would suggest checking it out.

If you like the English actor Steve Coogan, I highly recommend "24 hour party people". One of the best and funniest (in a very clever way) movies EVER.

although they were entertaining at the time ...the likes of Airplane, National Lampoon's XYZ, Stripes, Naked Gun etc don't do it for me on a repeated basis. I explcitly dislike anything John Candy or Rodney Dangerfield ever did

my top 3:

Clerks
Blazing Saddles (followed by Spaceballs in the Mel Brooks oeuvre)
The Big Lebowski

Blues Brothers - Classic Belushi and Ackroyd

Planes, Trains & Automobiles - Classic Candy and Martin

All of the Christopher Guest mockumentaries, including Spinal Tap.  Eugene Levy is the funniest man in the movies today.  I hate the one-joke films made by Will Ferrell.

I'm not even going to try to nominate which one comes out on top, just want to mention a few:

A LONG time ago - I was just a kid at the time - I saw The Nutty Professor (the original one with Jerry Lewis), and remember literally laughing until I ached. Whether I would find it as funny now I don't know, I suspect not. Ones tastes change (usually) as one leaves childhood behind for adulthood.

Monty Python can do no wrong IMHO,  and Holy Grail is probably their best movie proper.

And while I cracked up at Blazing Saddles, I thought Silent Movie was even better. That cameo appearance by Marcel Marceau was a stroke of pure genius.

My friend and I were on a crappy B-movie kick and we ventured across a movie called Thunderpants. The title itself pretty much sealed the deal. The movie is literally about a kid that has a flatuence problem and his genius friend constructs a machine that utilizes his gas to power him into space. It was so bad that I have never laughed so hard during a movie. Additionally, I just watched the Hudsucker Proxy by the Coens and found it to be quite funny.

Fav funny movies?
Cool Runnings. An oldie that i've seen many times and it still makes me laugh.

Fav scenes:
- Where they try to find a name for the bobsled. (Tallulah!)
- Where Junior stands in front of the mirror and sees himself as a failure, when his teammate gives him a peptalk.
- Sanca and all his "Wanna kiss my lucky egg? " moments and responses to the question:
"Sanca man, are you dead? "

But nothing beats Monty Python's  "Quest for The Holy Grail!!!"
I can dream that movie and it still makes me laugh.

http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_pictures/grail/large/HolyGrail006.jpg

"How do you do, good lady? I am Arthur, King of the Britons. Who's castle is that? "
King of the who?
"The Britons!"
Who are the Britons?
"Well, we all are. We are all Britons, and I am your king"
I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous collective.
" I am your king! "
Well, I didn't vote for you.
" You don't vote for kings! "
Well, how'd you become King, then?

* BRILLIANT *

" We are noooo longer, the Knights who say NI!
We are nooow, The Knights who say:  Ecke Ecke Ecke... Ptang Zooooo Boing!! "

Ever saw the Lego version, Bob?
It's on the bonus disc that comes with the special edition DVD.
Especially 'The knights of the round table" song.
It's hilarious.

Ooooh forgot about Trading Places - I love that movie too

Me too, though I haven't seen it for ages and it might have aged badly.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian. It's a pity they don't make movies like that anymore.

I also liked Spaceballs because I didn't like Star Wars. It was a great spoof on that.

I'm not a fan of American comedy in general, but I want to put in a good word for Silent Movie. The scene with Marcel Marceau was pure genius.

Great pick! Absolutely fantastic movie. Some recent comedies that I have seen that I highly recommend are The Hangover and Tropic Thunder.
