I'm down in London quite often so a meetup for a few beers in London village is a possibility. Let's see if there's enough people interested to make it worthwhile.

Cheers,

No problem with a mention of that forum - I'm on there myself, as you've probably noticed!!

It would be good if we could get something similar organised for this forum but the lack of replies to this part of the forum has made me wonder if perhaps I was being a little optimistic about this!

I'm from Belfast in Northern Ireland and know there must be at least one other PT fan in Belfast - 'cause they bought the UTDS re-issue in HMV before I got back for it!

So, anyone here from NI?

I'm in Lancaster, and not a car owner, so meet-up opportunities are limited.

Not too cool for gigs though - I think the last time PT played Wales was 1997! I guess it's easy enough to hop over the Severn Bridge for the regular Bristol gigs though!

Simon,

Bristol is my home town but it's a three and a half hour drive from here. Much easier for me to get to Wolverhampton which is where I saw PT live for the first time this year. This is the first concert I have been to since Pink Floyd at Earls Court. And well worth the effort. What a great show.

I notice that the screenplay of the film on which Deadwing is based is set in Wales. Do you know of any particular reason for this?

What's your fave British accent though - there are many! I'm guessing that a Brummie accent is probably not too high on your list though. If you don't know what Brummie is just think Ozzy!!!

My fave brit accent? Well, I have to say London, I'm biased of course, but they just sound so cool.  But scottish people sound funny, which is cool too.

And I'm still not sure what a 'brummie' sounds like  Wink

You've not heard Ozzy Osbourne speak?

Brum is a local word for Birmingham, in the middle of the country (about 20 miles north of me) and birthplace of bands like Black Sabbath, Duran Duran, Judas Priest, Nick Drake, ELO, Diamond Head etc. etc.

Birmingham is the 2nd biggest city in the country. You wouldn't want to spend too much time there though Wink

I live near Abergavenny in SE Wales but only for 5 more weeks.  I' m then moving to Wigan which is v. close to my home town of Bolton.  Maybe we can meet up, Andy?  The Manchester gig was packed and I guess they weren't all students or people like me who had travelled 150 miles so there must be more Northern PT fans.  Declare yourselves!

I'm not from the UK, but I certainly wish I was. Have wanted to move there since I was 16, it's just never happened. Maybe someday. I have spent just under a week there, in London and south from Kent to Winchester and up to the Salisbury Plain area. My stay was not nearly long enough. I wish I could get back there tomorrow. Given the opportuni, I'd be there in a heartbeat.
Just read the earlier posts and wanted to say to Mind_Sculpture that I first lost my pre-teen heart to a Scotsman from Edinburgh. I loved everything Scottish, especially that very charming Scottish accent. That was a long time ago though, but I still find it very charming.

Honestly though, nothing beats the English accent, especially the London accent. I don't know if it has an actual name or if its just the London accent. It is certainly the most classy accent on earth.

Sorry I interrupted and  I'm off the subject here.

p.s. You guys do need to get better catsup/ketchup (don't remember which way you spell it) It's the only thing I would have to get from across the pond here.

I'm just speculating, really, but after a very full year touring 'In Absentia' in 2003, there were no P-Tree concerts at all in 2004, whlst SW devoted himself to Blackfield and other projects.  After a full year focusing on 'Deadwing' in 2005, might 2006 be spent on a new Blackfield album and other things, but not P-Tree concerts, at least in Europe?

I think your speculation is pretty much on the money. Next year for PT will almost certainly be a year off. Perhaps some festival shows (probably European) but certainly no record releases.

A Blackfield album next year is highly likely and with it I'd be fairly certain to see some touring but I can't see it being any more than a London show, as last time.

Of course, I could be completely wrong!

I never say no to a pint or two! Don't know the Glasgow pubs at all though, so can't recommend any... I know there's a Weatherspoons on the same road at Carling Academy though, just on the other side of the Clyde!

I live in Derby in the East Midlands, but am originally a Londoner from Darn Sarf...

I'm off with my job to Exeter in January - where I'll be away during the week (the joys of construction!)... so would be well up for meeting up with people for gigs down that way... although i think Bristol is my nearest venue.

I'm probably going to a gig in Leicester next month (13th). The excellent iLiKETRAiNS are playing a small venue called Sumo which seems to be just down the road from the famous Charlotte venue where I saw PT in 1996!

I have seen people wearing Porcupine Tree clothing at gigs, most notably the Motorhead gig I went to last year in Oxford, which was surprising.

Hi All, I am over from Dark Matter via Simon`s Plug for this Board. Smiley
I am from and live in"THE" City, London so I am lucky enough to get to see Our Incredible
band whenever they play here. Smiley
Any one else on here from London who wants to meet for a Beer and talk about the Genius that
is known as Steven Wilson? Smiley
BTW I work about 5 mins away from the Astoria, Borderline etc so if anyone needs tickets at
any time I dont mind getting as it saves paying the Buggers Fees.
One last thing, I actually live in East London (Cockney) where the Best Football team plays,...

Given it's a weekend and the office workers won't be around, you might get away with on-street parking.  I've had some success finding spaces behind the Aquatic Centre (Google for directions; it's just off the Mancunian Way).  If you want something more secure Wink, I've used a multi-storey car park on Princess Street.

I don't know the Oxford Road pubs.  There's a typical studenty bar in the main Academy building (i.e. next door to the concert venue).  No idea whether it's any good!

Anyone have plans to meet up?

Yep Bantam, taking the missus but she has not heard much of PT, not her to her taste really. We are stopping overnight so we can have a drink or two and not rush home.

I was born in Rotherham, and when I'm not at uni live close by in a town called 'Dinnington', me and my dad have attended loads of CRS gigs, [Karnataka, Mostly Autumn, Magenta, IQ] and my dad actually works at the same place as Martin Hudson [the dude that runs the CRS] I have to say its the best thing about living near Rotherham!

Not exactly a fan spotting, but I was checking my local library online catalogue yesterday (County Durham Libraries) to see what CDs they had and I was rather surprised to see an almost complete collection of PT CDs, most of them being held in Seaham and Easington Colliery! Unless it's the sheep, someone round here (apart from me) likes 'em Grin

Well, five of them.  undecided

It's an interesting idea, though: if someone hasn't heard 'Lightbulb Sun' or 'Recordings', you could try your local library service.

(Co. Durham doesn't have them, and Lancashire doesn't seem to have any P-Tree material at all.)

For a rural service I reckon five is pretty complete!  Cheesy

Off topic slightly, but it's a shame that so many branch libraries are closing down. In addition to the obvious books, I found a lot of music via the CD lending section. Ideal if you want to 'try before you buy'...

Hmmm, to be fair I have lived in Dinnington since I was 9 years old [so thats 12 years now] and it is miles better then Rotherham, there always seems to be an air of hostility in Rotherham and the town centre has become a chav heaven in recent months.

Where abouts do you work in Dinnington?

Working at a brand new newspaper printing press ( Jonstones Press ). When you put it that way about Rotherham town center I see your point. Used to enjoy a night out in town but I would not bother now, I had to go in the daytime last week and felt really uncomfortable, bad atmosphere like you say. As for the chav's, Dinnington has them, some work for us !!

Ahh, I live 2 minutes walk or so from the new printing press building [on the macleans estate], yeah completely agree with you, had to walk through Rotherham a couple months back to meet my Mother in Clifton Park and crikey some of the sights I saw!

Beer sometime perhaps? There's a couple of good pubs in Brum near Snow Hill station (the Old Joint Stock being one) which are handy for people like me traveling in from the surrounding areas.

Hi Simon,
We met @ the last Manchester gig, also the Marillion unplugged gig in the Brum HMV, well I'm not shy or apathetic, just bit a tardy....  As I don't drink any more, a social event for discussing PT, Hmm, I'd rather save it for a pre-gig meet atm, nothing personal, just don't have the time atm.
Slightly OT but I hope the Marillion and PT tours don't clash, it would be a shame to have to choose between them....
Also have You seen this: http://www.flickr.com/groups/voyage35/ some nice pix there....

Sounds good, keep me posted Simon (sbrownlow@ntlworld.com).   I can talk Marillion far better than I can PT, but willing to give it a shot nevertheless.   P.S. Whisper it, but there's two or three of us around here (all into Marillion, PT, Blackfield and - strangely - Runrig!) so there'd be a few up for it.

I lived in the Midlands (near Stratford-upon-Avon to be exact) until two years ago when personal circumstances moved me to West Yorkshire.

I miss my family and friends from down there, but I don't miss the over-inflated house prices and the tourists.

I know PT played at the Wheatsheaf in Stoke back in 1999, about 4 weeks before I was introduced to them  Sad What's the betting Simon was at that gig?

I saw PT play the Flapper back in '96 - it was the infamous 'fire alarm' gig. The encored with Linton Samuel Dawson that night - awesome!!!

Is the Flapper still open as the Flapper - haven't been there for about 5 years.

It's still the Flapper, yeah. It's great in the summer, sitting out by the canal with a pint of Guinness.
It's hard to imagine that they've ever played there.

I've seen PT play in Brighton a couple of times - once at the Concord and once at another venue that reminded me of an old school hall!

It's not the best place in the world but neighbouring places like Dudley seem way way worse. I s'pose Kiddie's main claim to fame apart from the carpet industry and the Severn Valley Railway is that Planty lives a couple of miles away.

I don't live in the UK, but I have a question for those of you who do:
Where in the UK should you live if you basicly live for music? Cities with nice record stores and lots of concerts and that aren't super expensive of doom to live in? (And also at least a fair chance of getting a job)

I'm planning on moving over the little pond some time next year but I've no idea at all of where I should live, so any help with this would be really appreciated!  Smiley

Glasgow I reckon. Maybe not as much music as London, but cheaper and with people there who enjoy the music as apposed to standing about trying to look cool.

Outside of London there's nowhere really with lots of record shops - they've all died out really. For example a city the size of Birmingham only has about 2 independent record shops and it's the 2nd biggest city in the country!

London is way too expensive but if you're into music it's the only city to live in really. Or live within commutable distance of London - that might be the best bet. Oxford is a cool city to live in and only 50 miles (or so) from London.

PM me if you want to discuss this further...

FOPP (2 of the 7 remaining stores), Avalanche, Lost In Music, 23rd Precinct, Monorail Music, Mixed Up, Missing (back in name, not a patch on the original - or Listen - though), Record Fayre, In Search of the Lost Chord, Rubadub Records... all still in Glasgow, I believe. Any current residents want to fact-check that lot? Records still on sale at stalls in Barras, Paddies Market, Polmadie Market. An hour away by train in Edinburgh is Vinyl Villains and Backbeat Records as well as another Avalanche and another FOPP. But gigs are few and far between compared to the Home Counties. However if you live near London you'll probably not be able to afford gigs anyhow. Tongue

I just remembered something yesterday. While I was in Chester, on the 4th this month, I saw a guy at the train station with a FOABP t-shirt. Was that one any of you there? I was pretty excited, you don't see PT shirts around here in Valencia! Grin
