Title: Porcupine Tree Or Rush
Post by PTrocks1 on 03. Jul 2009 at 03:26

Both bands are pretty much equally amazing but which is better. To me rush takes it by a hair one because there canadian and two there songs just mean more to me. The only thing that's unfair to is that rush has been a band longer so they have more of an output.

With all respect,  I like Rush's music but I prefer Porcupine Tree's. ;)

This poll is a little silly. Apples and oranges....they're not even the same era or genre of music.

Rush aren't bad though, I don't think they are great though.

Partly agree, ... most polls are a little silly anyway, however, I WOULD put them in roughly the same genre though (whatever that means?) - but, for various reasons, theres not a particularly strong comparison is there?

Totally agree, ... me too, I 'discovered' Rush through 'All The Worlds A Stage' and have been a fan ever since and they get my vote simply for being around a lot longer.

What is the point of doing this poll on a PT FAN forum hahahaha....   You know who´s going to win.  I like Rush quite a bit, but not like some people around me who worship them. I did not like them at first, really annoyed with the vocals, it took me some time to get into them but I like them now.

I did not like them at first either, about 20+ years ago... I grew to really like them though I have not been super impressed with their newer material. They put on an excellent show! I had a friend who praised them constantly and drove me nuts over Rush.

Love PT more.

Rush never had much appeal to me for some reason. I like their music but at the same time something just doesn't click. Then again, it was the same with Pink Floyd and now I love them so maybe one day I'll get into Rush too.

And PT is my favorite band so... ;)

Whoa people - you are talking about a legend here.
If PT are still around after 41 years i will tip my hat.
Dying chipmunk?
I would give that award to Jon Anderson myself!
Actually i take that back - he is a fine singer as well.

Let me say that I have been listening to PT for about 4 years and find them to be an amazing band. The single most important thing I consider when deciding whether a band is good/bad or like Rush; on a different level, is: are they unique? to me about 95% of the crap out there that you listen to, you can easily say "oh, they sound like such and such", or whatever. and usually it's a sound that can be easily copied, and quite frankly, just sounds 'average'. Rush has always been on that DIFFERENT LEVEL, from a talent standpoint, to their attention to detail, to evolving and growing, having lyrics that mean something; and being genuinely good people. Dispite some of the goofy comments about Geddy's voice etc., evaluate the 35 plus years of their music catalog, and you'll find that they damn near stand alone. Not to mention the volumes of record sales...(they are staggering), and this is a band that Rolling Stone loathes, and certainly has never been a 'radio' favorite. Rush fans know what I mean here...

I am quickly putting PT as a band that has the potential to stand the test of time and become a band that may achieve the status of Rush. Obviously in this forum, Rush has no chance, but put on a level playing field, unfortunately, PT would be looking up and honoring/praising a band like Rush. Ask them, they might just agree with my comments...

Well put!
Whether you like them or not they are certainly unique.
The back catalogue speaks for itself, as do the gold discs and awards through the years.
I love PT, but i see elements of Rush in their music and im sure SW will be the first to admit that in order to find your own style you need to take elements from all your influences - im sure Rush is one of them.
I really do hate people slagging off Geddy Lee.
His voice in the early days was a bit of an aquired taste i admit, but from say Moving Pictures onward he really became a fine singer imo, there won't be another GL you can trust that.
To diss a band in one sentence is a bit insulting, but i presume these comments are from spotty teenagers on here who probably downloaded the Rush catalogue in MP3 and deleted it after listening to one or two tracks?

Title: Re: Porcupine Tree Or Rush
Post by opencar on 24. Sep 2009 at 18:09

Thank you,  hal. I'm also a fan of groups who not only create amazing meaningful music to listen to, but who can then transform it into a live set; usually outdoing even the months of work in the studio.  I have seen Rush live as early as 1982 and as recently as 2008. To say they've gotten better with age is an under-statement...
(especially Geddy!)

I got to see the PT show in Cleveland and was quite impressed. They obviously take what they do seriously, and doing that show without a good sound-check
(their equipment was late...) was first class. I would rather see them do a venue with a little more space...

Agreed on the teenager comment; or at least to the intelligence lever there of... LOL

;)

Nice to see fellow Rush fans on here OC!
Im looking forward to my first PT gig in Leeds.
I have left it late i know but i will make up for that!
Agreed on the bigger venue issue, perhaps a support slot on the next Rush tour?

As for Rush, seen them many times - always a class production, but thats what we expect from a band who has been on the road for 30 years plus.
Also, Rush are now playing 3 hour sets - i would like to see more bands do this.
Age can't be a factor, the guys in Rush have a combined age of 169 or there abouts! ;D

PT by far, for me at least. The Rush vocals never clicked for me. Although, in Rush's defense, I haven't extensively listened to them, although I do own 2112.

Rush for me! Rush actually helped me get into PT. I bought Deadwing around when it originally came out because a friend recommended it to me, and at the time I was your typical metalhead that only listened to metal, lol. I remember not liking Deadwing originally at all, I think maybe a year later I started listening to Rush and just fell in love with them. Sometime after FOABP came out I decided to give Deadwing another spin since my tastes had changed quite a bit since a few years prior, and fell in love with it. I was hooked from the first song! Crazy how things like that can happen... now PT is a very close 2nd favorite.

Rush definitely made me more open to different genres, and they're really the only band that's been around for over 30 years that I've found that still puts out quality material. Of course their new stuff isn't as good as the classics, but it's still pretty damn good! I also relate to Rush's songs more lyrically then PT's.

Never did get the Geddy Lee hate, I love his voice. I guess I could see why some people wouldn't be as into when he sang really high (pre- Permanent Waves) but from PW on I think he sounds just fantastic. Easily one of my top vocalists along with SW and Geoff Tate.

I'm listening to rushes caress of steel the The Fountain Of Lamneth to be excact one of the only great songs on that album bastile day being the other one and i'm just wondering how much Steve was influenced by rush and posibly this song in general it seems to have the same kinda flow as some of the longer songs steve has done from the heavyer parts to the soft melodys. If you haven't herd this song because it's one of there lesser albums I really suggest it defently up there with there other 15+ min songs.

Rush and Porcupine Tree are my 2 favorite bands. P.T., without a doubt, would have opened for Rush if Rush still had opening acts. Seen Rush 68 times, P.T. around 20. I listen to P.T. more now than I do Rush, largely because of 5.1.

Toss up!

Be well, all.

Post the same poll on a Rush forum, and Rush will win easily.

Polls like the "Muse vs Radiohead" one have more validity in this forum, as well as possibly giving useful info to people who are not familiar with both of those bands.

Porcupine Tree's music is so much deeper to me, and speaks to my soul. They transcend the reality that its a band playing music for me if that makes sense.

Whereas Rush are (GREAT) band that sound like a band, sound like 3 guys jamming, making music, awesome music. But there is no spiritual connection if that makes sense. An awesome rock band.

PT are great musicians as well, but so much more. Hope this makes sense.

PT easily and by far.

I appreciate the musicianship in Rush but they seem to be missing the "soul" that hear in PT stuff, and Geddy Lee is annoying as f*ck as a singer.
